I have been finding this alot lately even with Gutterman, I had one large spool, 800 miters I think, that had two knots in it. Needless to say Eloise, my Elna, was not too happy about it.

With the way the Bernina is designed the knot just came wiggling down in front of my wife's eyes. I'll bet she first thought it was a bug or something. I'm glad she saw it before it got into the tensioner or needle.

I wonder sometimes if letters to the manufacturer do any good.

One day when I was sewing with 100% cotton Gutterman thread purchased from Hancock Fabrics, it kept shredding in my needle (Size 12 sharp). I got so aggravated and frustrated that I yanked that spool of thread off and replaced it with another spool that I had purchased at Joann Fabrics. There was an immense difference in the lint and also the fact that the Gutterman purchased at Joann Fabrics did not shred. I started checking on the internet through google and I found that there are two different grades of Gutterman threads. One is manufactured in Mexico and the other one is manufactured in Germany. All of my Gutterman that was made in Mexico has sense been discarded in the trash can and I no longer purchase Gutterma thread of any kind at Hancock Fabrics.

I've never seen a splice in thread before but as a crocheter, I have come across plenty in skeins of yarn. One I know had to be a different dye lot because the color variation from one side of the knot to the other was tremendous. FYI: Dye lots in yarn is like buying a fabric one year and finding it again later only to find it doesn't match in colors although the printed pattern is the same.

Joe, yes, letters do good. I would write them and send a picture along. You never know, they may look at their quality control and maybe send you a spool of thread. But I would write just to let them know about their product, that usually makes me feel good to speak my beans. What can it hurt!

I had a knot like that a couple weeks ago on a spool of gutterman. I was quilting on my frame, going a million miles an hour. I just happened to stop and see it. It would have been ugly if I hadn't chanced to see it.
No I didn't contact the company, didn't think of it until later when the evidence was gone.

I can just imagine the mess a knot like that would cause if it got to the needle with the machine at wide open throttle. Ewww yuck!
