Look under the bed at the bobbin head on. Is the finger straight up nestled between the little tabs?

If the needle is in properly, flat to the left, and is the correct 15x1 type,
and it's threaded properly, from right to left, then somethings amiss in the bobbin area.
If the bobbin case is in properly as in misskira's drawing,
and the bobbin itself is in the case properly, as in it rotates counterclockwise when you pull on the thread as the open side of the bobbin case is facing you,
then there is either some thread under the needle plate that's causing problems, or perhaps the timing is off. FWs can be knocked out of time if they are messed with.

A quick check is to remove the bobbin case, and run the needle down as far as it will go. Slowly bring it back up about 9/32" and see where the point of the hook is. It should be directly behind the needle at the eye. You've got some leeway, but not much.

Hope this helps.

I did that with my 301 only to learn that I had to thread the needle from right to left which felt out of order for me, but now I find that I'm getting birds nests under the fabric. I feel a tension headache coming

It sounds like Joe has given you some pretty good advise. My FW wasn't sewing correctly yesterday and I know I had it threaded right and the bobbin was done correctly, etc. I had just put in a new Singer needle but the thread was breaking every few stitches, etc. So, I changed the needle again to a new one and took all the thread off the machine, cleaned out the bobbin area and took fabric to run between the tension plates. When I rethreaded it, everything worked perfect. She was just being a little fussy and wanted some attention, I guess. I'm sure yours will come around and work for you once it is happy from the attention she's getting.
