I have just been gifted with a Singer Bentwood with the serial number of JB276149. I have looked on the Singer site but all they have is J.....not JB...is there any place else I may look?

According to http://www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/stjohns/ the dates would be 1936 - 1948. I have tried calling regarding some other serial numbers I have and they will tell you that they can't pinpoint closer than that. If you are looking for the model, it might be on the machine. If there isn't a model number on the pillar somewhere, a picture would help identify the model.

Some of the arcives are lost unfortunately. Sometimes decals, various features, model number, finish, etc. can lead toward the beginn or end of the time frame, but 1936 to 48 isn't that bad really, but 12 years should leave room for a bit of detective work :- )

Ok my problem was that I had to resize my photo...also in this photo is a ??lever? to wind?? Not sure what it is for ...any help would be appreciated...thank you.

It's a model 128 (it can be a bit hard to tell dimensions from photos, but a 3/4 sized version of model 127 which is identical but a full size machine). Decals are very much in line with my 1934 model 99, so I'm guessing yours is closer to 1936 than 1948, or somewhere in the middle. The problem is I don't know how all decals types on the 128 looked like, nor when the changes happened. I know other models like 66, 99 had a distinct development in decal pattern. Closer to 1930 and up the decor turns simpler and simpler, black and gold only.

Your machine has the larger spoked hand wheel, which leans twoards a machine originally set up as hand crank, and later fitted with motor and lights. At the time it was sort of an upgrade ready made for the owner when she was ready for it.

I don't know what the winding lever is, a hand crank is usually larger. There should be a black metal lever inside the bent wood lid, together with a box of accessories.

Thank you Mickey2...yes there is a black lever, it was just laying inside the box but I did find out how to put it up on the lid.
I am anxious to get started sewing with this but the cord doesn't look all that safe so a new one may be in order.

Sassylass, the steel that goes from the pillar to the slide looks like it may be the control lever for the motor, though different from most I've see. Leaving the machine unplugged, if you put the right end of the lever into the hole at the right side of the case can you feel a bit of spring tension as you push the bottom of the lever to the right?

My28 is a blackside crinkle finish , newer than yours. currently ( no pun intended) converted to handcrank

Lucky you. I believe Mickey2 is correct as to it being a 128. I'm basing that on the size of the light in relationship to the arm. You can find a manual for similar machine at http://parts.singerco.com/IPinstManuals/127-3_128-3.pdf
or http://www.singerco.com/uploads/down..._127-128-3.pdf Unfortunately, neither one shows the bentwood models. I can't find a manual right now for the bentwood models. There was a thread here on QB recently about a kneebar with the "barrel" end. It appears that the handle would be inserted to the hole on the right side of the base and used as a knee controller rather than using a foot controller to run the machine. Does the black lever have the same kind of end??

I also noticed that you have a "Singercraft Guide" which can be used to make rugs or trim. Yours appears to be number 120936.
