Default Help w/Japanese 15 Clone Tension

My friend and I both have straight-stitch Turquoise colored Japanese 15-Clones (I actually have 2 turquoise ones). I believe my friend's is marked "Brother" on the underside and I know one (maybe both of mine) is also. Our machines are almost identical, although the stitch length levers and feed dog drop knobs differ. Two of the machines are badged "Kingston" and one is badged as "HomeMark".

The tension assembly is great on one of my machines, but not on my other and not on my friend's machine. On both of my machines, the main tension shaft has "teeth" at the back to which the tension spring attaches. But my friend's machine has a main tension shaft which is smooth (no "teeth") and there seems to be nowhere for the tension spring to attach. We are also searching for the correct tension spring for her machine.

I have searched the web looking for a diagram of tension assemblies for these machines, and the only thing I can find shows the tension shaft with the teeth.

I hope to figure out what the tension problem is with my turquoise machine which has a problem. But my friend is really at a standstill since we can't figure out how the tension spring should attach on her machine since there are no teeth on the shaft.

Does anyone know of any diagrams or have any help you can share about solving this tension problem?
