Help with a Wheeler and Wilson Treadle

I just went and picked up a Wheeler and Wilson Treadle machine from a friend who was going to let it sit in her basement..the number on it is 2622361...does anyone have any idea when it was born? Also, while cleaning it with the goop (i forget the name) I'm not sure if I am taking off decals or just dirt..how can I tell??

Take care with what you clean the decals with as a lot of the cleaning cremes will tarnish them. I use Blue Magic resin polish. It's an automotive product but does a great job and leaves the decals shining like new.

I have a Wheeler & Wilson treadle that I found the date on a plate on the bed of the machine. It was born in 1898. I also looked it up on the Smithsonian's website and was impressed with what l saw. I am neither near the machine or my computer. I will try too get this info to you later. Do you have the table it is set into with the cover that sits over the machine with the rounded edges? I do, out is lovely and in great shape for it's age. It was an anniversary gift from my hubby several years ago.

My advise, is don't touch it until you know exactly what to use. I have two W&W's one that was born in 1871, and the other I never dated, but it is not as old as the '71. I love both of them but never got them running, since I don't know what to do about the belt. Any suggestions?

The last date I can find on my plate is when it was last patented which was August 2nd 1892...no other dates are there..I actually checked the Smithsonian website the day I got her but haven't really delved into it yet..it didn't seem to have the D-9 that I saw...Mine is the regular 3 drawer cabinet not with the coffin top lid...
I have been using Goop to clean it up..it had lot of grime on it...I replaced the belt on my 1912 White treadle and it sews really well except i go backwards more than forward..there are alot of things on the web for replacing belts...I bought mine on ebay.
