It sure is shiny now. A lot of dirt got removed from that machine! Those Tiffany/Gingerbread decals are my favorite decals.

Thanks again Judy. When I first saw it I thought that the top part had been rubbed off completely. What a surprise when I rubbed in a little Singer oil and the decals and Japan appeared! Definitely no need for new ones, I'll just touch them up. I think they're just lovely, and the lotus is my other favourite.

Absolutely LOVE the way the woodwork has come up. I would like to do the same to my 1896 treadle table. The finish has got this rather dark, almost mahogany tone to it - shiny and irregular. Oh well... one day!

Hello Manicmike,

I'm really pleased looking at your photos to see how well your machines have cleaned up. So much of the grime on machines turns out to be superficial, and decals don't have to be perfect. Often a slightly beaten up machine means that it has been used a lot, which in turn means it's a good runner. I think it is such a shame so many machines just aren't used because they are old.

Thanks Muv, I wouldn't have thought of rubbing sewing machine oil on them to get rid of the dirt. It's very effective, and I bought some silver polish for the nickel plates yesterday. What a difference that makes, too. Thanks for your tips: You've enabled a lot of people to remove the grime veil.

I'm cleaning an Adler 30-1 leather patcher which from the look of it hadn't been in decades - and those were decades in a shop. Naturally I went to my arsenal of automotive cleaners and chemicals.
Nothing worked as well at cleaning up the finish than sewing machine oil.
I'm amazed and greatly appreciate the tip!

Glad found this link. I have an old treadle and it is in need of work so this might help clean it up a tad. I also have a vintage White machine that is beautiful and would love to get it taken care of also and put them both on display here in the house. Thanks

Definitely have to save this thread for future use. No pun intended on the "thread" part.
