The 301 is a machine that I would love to have next. 
I have a 128, 99K, 221 and some others that are not Singers but next....the 301. 
I hope you are able to bring it back to life. Can't wait to see pictures.

Thanks for your continued interest in my project. No, I have not gotten it to work. The main gear connecting the motor and the handwheel gear is frozen. That is beyond my capability, and since the machine only cost $15, I am dismantling it. I am keeping some of the parts as spares for my other 301, which is in fine working condition, and selling some of the other parts. I think it is a good idea to keep an extra foot controller on hand, which can also be used on my FW.
I imagine a Singer repair person could have fixed the machine, but at a cost. It seemed like the best decision to go no further on it and try to get some revenue from it.

I have a slant needle 404 singer sewing machine. I have had it for awhile, but unfortunately I can't get it to run properly for long. I have tried different setting, but so far nothing works. For the last setting, I loosened the tension from nuber 3 back to zero and I set it to a larger stitich. It will stitch about 8 inches down the cloth, and then it starts gathering and the bobbin thread gets alll tangled. So I have to cut the fabric from the thread. I'm wondering if a repair man can even fix it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Check and see if the needle is installed flat side to the back.
Check and see if your needle is slightly bent.
Are there any burrs on your pressure foot, needle plate hole, or on the shuttle?
Some times the tension does need a bit of clean up. Put a bit of sewing machine oil on a piece of string and then 'floss' your tension. I have had dried up oil do that on one of my machines.
Is there any lint in the bobbin area? To clean, pull out the bobbin carrier - see manual - once you have done it and re-assembled it is pretty easy. The first time is the hardest - look at how it goes real good before you take it out. Take a picture if needed. keep us posted.

I'm not sure how many might know about the trick of making the screwdriver magnetic. Just slide the blade several times across a good magnet and it helps keep the screw on the blade so you can remove it without dropping. I just leave my little screwdriver on the magnet so it's as ready as possible. Also lay a sheet down around the area so in case something falls you have a better chance of finding it. I'm sure you can guess how I know the one. LOL after I found it.
