Default Needle position on a ZZ

I have a Dressmaker 700 ZZ c. 1950's?? and the standard needle position seems to be all the way to the left. The needle position will only center if it's in the buttonhole setting. Is this right? I'm trying to find my 1/4" mark for seams and am a little befuddled. TIA!

Yes some of the Japanese ZZ machines do park to the left. There is a left parking, high shank SS foot made for those machines.
