Default Newly purchased 401a

I just purchased a 401a for $90.00. Got home and after oiling and cleaning, it makes a clicking sound when stitching. I hope I didn't make a big mistake. I'm having some buyer's remorse. Does anyone have any idea what could be the matter?

Others will have better ideas, but first check that the plate around the feed dogs (the plate under the foot when you're sewing) is screwed down tight. You can get some wild and exciting noises when that's loose.

Are you sure you have the correct bobbin in the machine? Just because it came with a bobbin in it or in a case, doesn't mean it's the right one:> Also, change the needle to a new one straight away.

Did you take the bottom off and oil everything that moves or could move, likewise the top? New needle inserted correctly? Check the bobbin case over carefully? The 400 series are good machines. Don't give up yet.

I always have to reply when I see someone has bought a 401A. That is my first vintage machine (well, other than my 1951 Featherweight which I received as a gift in 1959.) Have been using mine regularly since my father purchased it for me in January, 2012. We were thrift store browsing, I saw it and he offered to pay. Have since purchased 8 more vintage machines and love them all. I agree with irishrose, don't give up yet. The people on here are very good at helping us find solutions to our myriad problems.

The 401s have a few areas that are oil hungry. The best rule of thumb is if it moves oil it. And once you get the bobbin, needle, and other details figured out, using it will make it quieter and smoother.

Have you cleaned and oiled the machine? Some times lint gets stuck in there. You may need to remove the bobbin race and clean that area. Check your manual.

I have one of these and it sews like a dream. I have a local singer store that will service any sewing machine but has a particular love for vilntage. So I am blessed! Also, my husband just cleaned and oiled the 401A. Sewing baby stuff yesterday on it. The store told me they should be cleaned and oiled yearly and they will last forever. Hope it works out for you!

I have had my 401A for 55 years; in hospital only once. It sews like a dream still. I own a Viking computerized machine and a featherweight but I still go to my 401A. You'll love it when you get the "bugs" out of it.

I know this is going to sound stupid but, did you make sure the screw that holds the needle is tight? For some reason my 401's screw will come loose and the needle clicks on the plate.
