Singer 211 G help
I have a singer 211 G 165. It keeps breaking the top thread. I am running T70 coated polyester thread with a size 18 needle. I have never sewn with this machine so I don’t know if it’s me or the machine that has the malfunction

First 3 things I can think of is to check the tension. Keep in mind the numbers on the dial are not necessarily the tension. So loosen it a bit at a time to see if that makes a difference. Next check you needle. Also be sure your machine is oiled well. The tiniest bit of rust can cause thread to break.Sometimes a bur can cause this. I would do these 2 things before thinking anything else.

Yes I have been tinkering with the thread tension. It doesn’t really have markings it’s just a threaded knob with a spring and disks.
This machine is quite filthy and I’m slowly getting it cleaned up and probably oiled. Hopefully I will have better luck tomorrow.

I likely misrepresented my needle size. I have learned now that there is a needle system number for these machines. And then size and type needle. I apparently have a needle system 135x17 with size 21 needles??? Please don’t believe me until I figure this out. This machine has a thread Oiler wow . The service manual has a lot of timing settings etc. this thing is way out of my wheel house. My local shop is a Bernina dealer he and the shop are amazing. I’m going to try some more stuff but I think I need professional help not only for my sewing machine. Lol

According to Thread Exchange, the T70 would take an 18 needle.
What are you wanting to use the machine to make?

Thanks for everyone’s knowledge. I had my wife pick up a pack of needles from the bernina dealer. I’m getting some decent stitches now with correct thread to needle. I was so flabbergasted by the thread breaking I was ready to give up.
as far as what I’m making my imagination is only limited by my skill at this moment. My first project will likely be seat covers for the golf cart at work. I could have probably done those covers on any home owner machine but not with the bigger thread.

Ok the problem reappeared and I noticed the thread was breaking at the thread guide on the presser foot shank. Everyone said to look for burs. I found one. I had to take it apart to actually see it.
