I could get one of my kids to stand and crank it while I sew...HAHAHAHA
I see so many in my Area for hand crank machines, but I think that would be so hard for me to sew on, because I seem to need both my hands to guide the material.

StephT,
You can do anything with a HC machine you can do with an e-machine or treadle .... except go fast.
I put together a HC 99K from a rusted derelict and it sews great.
You go slow so controlling the fabric isn't that hard. Especially if you take the time to check and align the foot to the feed dogs if needed.
The most out of adjustment part I run into with the machines I've purchased is the presser foot. They are generally twisted out of alignment with the feed dogs and the fabric feeds crooked because of it.
As for getting your kids to crank it, not a chance.

my fantsy is an exercise bike powered sewing machine.....that and the lower thread fed off a spool of thread not a bobbin.......you could always wind a bobbin for the upper thread that is in plain sight if it is about to run out of thread.
ok, coffee is ready, finally
