$48- is it worth it?

Hi all,
While purusing antique shops today, dh and I came across an old Singer in a 'brown case' The retail was $60, less 20%, bringing the purchase price to $48 plus tax.

I put the machine ID # into my phone and found out it was made between '48 and '51. Would someone please tell me what I need to look for to determine it a worthwhile purchase. How would I know if it is/not salvagable as an operating piece? Seriously, I think it would be great to have an eye candy piece, but it could be used to acutually make a quilt, all the better.

Please feel free to point me in the right direction.

Many thanks,
d

D,

By "brown case" do you mean the vinyl covered case, or do you mean the bentwood case? I take it from your "eyecandy" remark that the machine looks good?
Check to see that it has a bobbin case, and check to see that the needle moves when you turn the handwheel. After that, anything is fixable! :)
$48 is a fair price. :)

Update,
appears the machine dates back to '41.

Do you know what model it is? (Can also be determined by the serial number if you have that). Fifty bucks doesn't seem unreasonable for a machine. Is it missing any parts (foot pedal or knee bar, bobbin slide cover)? How is the finish? Would you have to rewire it? Just some things to consider if you want to use it.

The case alone in very good condition is worth the price...but hard to say without a model # and photo.
