15-91 convert to hand crank?
I have someone interested in buying a machine, but the person wants only a hand crank. I have several 66s to pick from, and a couple of 15-91s, and I'm wondering if anyone has converted a 15-91 to hand crank and what's involved in terms of additional parts, other than a spoked handwheel and the crank itself. If the person shows up they may be just fine with a 66 but if a 15-91 can convert I'd like to offer the option.
I haven't had 15-91 apart for quite a while, and am having trouble picturing it apart, and the workbench is full up with machines and parts in bins already. |
I would suggest doing a search on this board because a member from way back, Miriam, used to talk about that a lot and how she did it. Good luck with it.

I found a lot of posts from Miriam about hand cranks, but not about converting a 15-91. I'll keep looking...

The 15-91 is a fine machine, with that potted motor.
I would let hem look at the stable of 66s, and pick from those. The 66 is a lighter running machine, and will handcrank easily. Whike the -91 can be handcranked, it isn't suited to that as well as the 66. |
Not having sewn on either to any extent, I was guessing they would be about the same. Thanks!

This drive is from a 201 and I think the 15-91 may use the same pieces
https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...738-621659.jpg The hand wheel has a spiral drive on it. The bobbin winder will go away, and the 3 lobe clutch disc is different. I started the conversion and am head scratching now. 66 is far easier. |
I was thinking it might be a headache, I will stick with the 66s for hand crank purposes.

toughest part is the clutch washer. sometimes it takes a few tries.

Here the potted motors are few and far between, it would be terrible if someone converted one to hand crank. Why would you do that when an old hand crank is much easier to find than convert?

Think i would cry if someone tried to convert my 15-91 to a Hand Crank.
Would love to get my paws on a 99K Hand Crank though https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/thumbup.png |
