15K88 1951 Treadle?
Hello - I am picking up a 15K88 1951 Centennial Treadle - the lady just wants to get rid of it because she bought it 10 years ago for decoration. I had no idea they made treadles up to that year. Would this be a machine that perhaps was treadled after? I was thinking of placing it in a box and converting to hand crank with parts from sew classic. Will post a pic tonight, after I pick it up.

I believe they made treadles right up to the 60s, but don't quote me.
I'd keep it as a treadle. There's always an orphan machine with no case or cabinet lurking in the corner somewhere that needs rescued. Joe |
Vanginney, Definitely keep it as a treadle. Machines are best kept in the condition in which they were manufactured. Also, you will be able to do free motion quilting with it as a treadle, so a 15 is about the most versatile treadle you can get.

Picked it up tonite. Needs a cleaning and oil. My treadle from 1917 is quarter cut oak & all cast iron legs....I can tell as we get more recent to today, quality goes down...cheaper metal legs and just OK wood for the cabinet in 1951!

And if you compare that "just OK wood for the cabinet in 1951" to what is available today it will be the same comparison as you just made from the early 1900s to 1951.
I have a Singer 5 drawer treadle cabinet made with stamped metal legs rather than the cast iron. The wood is the same and it's very solid. The machine in it dates to 1919. I don't know if the cabinet is the same ages as the machine. I'd love to see a pic of your 1951 treadle. It's only a year older than me :) Joe |

Yes...I think it has stamped metal legs. Don't get me wrong...I am very thankful for this machine & cabinet....I was just surprised by the difference in quality. Also being a Centennial machine makes special too. And I am sure your more than just 'OK' Joe!

But the 1917 one looks to be quarter cut oak....and cast iron everywhere.

That is a beautiful 15 set up...elegant and perfect. Enjoy it.

vanginney,
That looks just like my cabinet, its a good cabinet. It treadles very nicely. It currently has a 1936 Singer 201K, formerly a hand crank machine. Sharon |
Oh my, she is beautiful. Some day, I hope to be able to get one.
