Case had not been taken care of--worked on it - primed and wound up covering with contact paper--looks much better-
Machine sews really well--it is very similar to featherweights- think it is 3/4 size - runs very quiet

Golly, you've hit the jackpot haven't you. she is pretty too.

KittyKat77 08-14-2012 12:58 PM

What a cutie!

craftybear 08-14-2012 12:59 PM

love the sewing machine

UglyCook 08-14-2012 12:59 PM

Oh! So cute! I've never seen one of those before.

Candace 08-14-2012 01:19 PM

Except it weighs like 3 times what a Featherweight does. It's a heavy beast! I've had mine for quite a while and it doesn't get out much to play anymore.

KittyKat77 08-14-2012 02:05 PM

Yeah, there's a reason my Japanese Singer-clone is nicknamed "The Hulk."
It's no lightweight!

I have the 185K, same green monster. I wonder what the difference is between the "J" and "K" versions? I know I "smacked" some seller on ebay recently who tried to tell me that these were in fact THE featherweight that everyone is seeking, and I didn't know what I was talking about. He sold one of these advertised as such. I sure hope the buyer isn't disappointed when she sees it.

OK Ashboro, have you been looking into my sewing room? I have this machine too and she is a peach. Mine came in a cabinet for $15.00 at our Salvation Army. These little vintage machines are just so cute and easy to sew on.

Cute, cute.

Quilt Novice 08-14-2012 05:52 PM

I love it!

I saw one of these at a flea market last month, priced at $60 but seller offered to go to $45. I wasn't sure what it was and passed on it, don't know if it worked or not. I came home and did research, found out it was an upgrade to the 99 and very similar. I have a 99 but am regretting passing this one up.

I am sure you will enjoy this little gal (or guy?) You sure fixed up the case nice.

earthwalker 08-14-2012 10:24 PM

Sweet! Love the colour and nice job with the contact paper.

I have a 185 also, but due to its weight, it sits in its case in the corner of my sewing room, most of the time. I always intend to give it more use, but when it comes time to pack up and go, I always grab a FW or a 301.

The green color is so cool, and it does sew nicely.

Have one here, although it is on the list to get cleaned up and fixed, wait, might have two. Haven't sewn on them so might enjoy them. I do know they are definitely heavy little brutes. I think maybe the J and the K refer to where they were manufactured. That is they way it is for my 301A.

Nice looking machine! Great job on the case too!

DanofNJ 08-16-2012 05:18 AM

This was the replacement of the 99K believe it or not...

Nice machine though, I have one too.
The 285's were terrible, but the 185's are terrific and sew as well as the 99's.

parrynj 08-16-2012 07:17 AM

I have the 185J in it's original green case. Picked it up at our local Salvation Army. The case was filthy but cleaned up beautifully and the machine looked like it was barely used. I had my FIL build me a wooden base for it so I could preserve the case but still use the machine. The 60 year old plastic in the base is starting to crumble a little bit. It sews beautifully! And looks so cute sitting out in my sewing room. It's one of my favorite machines.
