1870 American #2 "the beast"

Ok, I bought this on the auction site, and it is really cool. It is pretty rare. I have not found other web pictures of a #2 so far.... This is the #2 "Manufacturing Machine for family, tailoring and leather work"
it is basically a #1 on steroids. They even use the same shuttle and bobbin. This one was made in 1873. ( I mistyped the title sorry) It has a 4 digit serial number (always cool) and this is one of the earliest machines made to use round bobbins. (in a vibrating shuttle no less!) This is after an oil on cloth wipe down to clean off the dirt and spider stuff |

to put it's size in perspective. the #1 is a "normal" sized domestic machine from 1874.

Very cool, Steve! Just to have something that old is neat.

Thanks for the pictures, I couldn't imagine how you could have a round bobbin in vibrating shuttle.

Nice! Thank you for the pics showing the difference in size between the #1 and #2. I've read about the #2 but have never seen one before. I hope I can see it in person some day.

You find the coolest stuff! Very cool bobbin arrangement.

You really do find the coolest stuff Steve. That's a great one!

OOOh, lookit all that harp space!
You posted this type of bobbin case before, recently, didn't you? Someone did. (I have a TERRIBLE memory, sorry) VERY cool stuff! |
I have also posted about the American #7 Handcrank that I got (and Cathy has posted about her #7 Treadle head)
They use a version of this shuttle but without the "dogleg". it is straight. Same bobbin EDIT: Yes, the harp space is cool, but the real "claim to fame" on this is it's "punching power". The handwheel weighs 2x what the #1 unit's does. and the needlebar is about 20% thicker. |
