1941 Singer Machine

Ladies,
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1941 Singer in a cabinet with bench. What should I look for to make sure everything is alright with it? I'm going to look at it on the 19th and hopefully bring it home with me. I did ask them to make sure it stitches as I have to drive an hour one way to pick it up. The lady has not sewn with it but says it is threaded. She said she would try it and if it doesn't stitch she would let me know.

Thank you for any and all information you can send my way.

Could you post a little more information about it - model, serial number or a photo? Generaly I would say make sure it is complete and has been stored indoors. Exterior condition tells a lot about how it was cared for. Expect that it will need at a minimum a good cleaning and lubrication. Check with motor and controller wiring. Odds are that if the wiring is original, it should be rewired. The old insulation deteriorates and cold cause an electrical safety hazard.

Don't worry about making stitches...if it's not doing it when you get it, you can adjust and tweek it and it'll be just fine. Main things are bobbin case, all the major parts and pieces. These machines are so sturdy...don't worry. Even the worst looking ones turn out great.

if it is all rusted up are you willing to work on it? How dirty are you willing to get? parts cost more than the machines some times - she is right - make sure it is all there - there is info on this board to get about any old black machine running

Thanks for the information. I'm going to try to post a picture of it.

That looks pretty complete and not too dirty. I would check the electrical cords to make sure they are in good shape and that you have the bobbin holder. It may have a knee bar so look inside the cabinet for that or for the control foot.

A nice machine and a cabinet to boot.

Ask if she has any assesories. Those are always a bonus and nice to have.

Good luck and let us know if you get her home next week.
