1947 Featherweight

I am going to call her Lizzie as she was made in Elizabeth Port, New Jersey according to her number on the bottom. I have oiled all 10 spots and fixed the tensions so she is sewing a nice stitch. I took out her drip pan liner as it was smelling funky. I will probably replace the plug and foot pedal as it is green and probably not original to the machine. I will use it as is for now. I will be taking her for a checkup soon as I don't have the proper lubricant for the motor or know how to do that. The screws on the faceplate are also stuck so a professional will need to do that for cleaning. I also need to pick up some bobbins as I only have the one in the machine.
The case and tray are sitting out in the sun to help with the musty smell but I might need to strip the case later. |
Check out singer-featherweight.com. They have the lubricant you need and many videos on how to care for your machine. They are wonderful to deal with and very helpful!

She's a beauty! I haven't used mine extensively but I have enjoyed the times I have used it.

congrats on the featherweight

How lovely! Where and how did you get her?

I found her at an estate sale and she was $50 in the funky smelling case. For that price I figured I can put up with her odor until it airs out. I have wiped it down and removed all the felt pieces to help. Anyone have any hints to hurry up the process of will I just have to wait it out?

congratulations! I was born in Elizabeth, NJ in 1944. There is enough info on line that you should be able to do routine maintenance by yourself if you want to. Check out www.novamontgomery.com. Enjoy!!

Congratulations, she's a beauty. I put an open bowl of flower desiccant ( the stuff used to dry flowers in) in mine to help with the smell. It worked for me.

Personally, having bought one of each of the tubes of lube from the two main sellers, I'd say getting a small jar of vaseline for lubing the motor is a much more economical choice.
