1948 Singer tension

I have really messed up my tension on my moms' old singer. It's a 1948 Singer with knee pedal. Can't seem to get it back to a workable place. I think it's a 66.... or 99. I don't remember. It is a full size machine in a cabinet. Has thread tension on front and feed dog tension on top??? (I think it's feed dogs!) Could you please pm me as I'm having a hard time following a thread .... can't find them after I've started one.BLESS YOU FOR HELPING!

What is happening? Is the thread coming to the top of your fabric or pulling down to the bottom?

I'm chatting in PM with Heather, her fabric is gathering as she stitches, with a large stitch on top and a smaller stitch on the bottom...
Suggestions?

Is the bobbin hanging up somewhere gathering the fabric? Maybe try cleaning the bobbin area and a new bobbin?
Is she using the right bobbin (66 not 15)

I'm guessing that it's a top tension issue...dust or a piece of thread caught in it keeping her from tightening it...

Could she run a piece of dental floss through the top tension to get rid of any debris that might be causing the problem?

Is her tension spring sprung?

Charlee 01-28-2012 10:14 AM

She had to go to work, she tried cleaning between the disks with no results...
I don't know if the spring is working correctly or not...and I'm at work so can't check my own 66, do the bobbins have a slight curve to them or are they flat?

Some info might be of help

66 bobbins have the slight curve. A couple of things I can think of: look at the check spring to see if it is doing what it should or make sure she has the foot pressure correct for the fabric she is sewing so the fabric will feed correctly. I had all kinds of crazy stuff happen when I didn't have enough pressure on the foot..
