1950 Singer 15-88
I just purchased a Singer treadle 15-88
that the belt will not stay on. I replaced with a new belt and it is like there should be a lip on the top wheel where it slips off. It sews beautifully until it slips off. Help! |
is it sitting in a groove to the left of the handwheel?

There should be a groove on the inside of the handwheel for the belt. This is a funny pic but you can see the two grooves for the two handwheels. |
That is the issue, there is a groove but seems to need a lip to sit in, it is smooth.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXEoZIBserE talks about it at approximately the 3 minute mark. Granted not a Singer 15, but it is a 15-clone, so the treadle belt would be the same. Something else I would check would be that it is threaded through the "throw off" thingy by the underneath fly wheel. Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. Janey, thank you so much! I watched the Leah Day U tube video and found out that I wasn't on the mechanism which pulls the belt. It was at 3.43 minutes and makes so much of a difference. I am going to have to make another hole and reclamp, but that will have to wait until I get the horses fed and the barn cleaned. We had a really bad storm here last night so I spent the morning digging ditches. Tonight I will work on this again. Thanks so much!!
