1954 Singer 319 "Greenie"

Can anyone tell me which machine needles are to be used in this machine? I seem to recall someone stating that it took a special needle and universal or other Singer needles would not work.

PossumJimandElizabeth.com has a good review of this machine. They are collectors who love earlier sewing machines. Excellent photos of one like your green one, also a discussion of needles for this machine.

These machines require 206 x 13 needles.

Aha!!! The same needles as my 306 uses. And please use only these or you're asking for trouble. The only place I've found them is on the internet - think it was eBay but it could have been Amazon - just google the needle size. No one else I'm aware of sells them, not even vintage machine dealers. It's worth getting a nice amount - can't remember what I paid. These se are nice machines though.

I think some have had them adjusted for regular 15x1 / 130 needle. You should be able to tell from the needle that's in the machine, but hard to know since it's such a common mistake to insert the regular 130 needle in just any domestic machine. The wrong needle will damage the bobbin case.

I'm curious is how you found out the year of your 319. When I called Singer to try to date mine, all I got was a range of sometime between 1956 and 1962.

As Mickey2 mentioned there are some that have changed 319s to accept and use 15x1. From what I have read, part of the reason would so one would be able to use more sizes of needles. I know Sew-Classic carries the 206x13 but only in two sizes.

Sew classic had the 206x13 needles a couple years ago, don't know if they still do.

It doesn't look like it initially when you go to http://shop.sew-classic.com/5-Needles_c42.htm but if you look at the top of the page it has a blue box that you click on. It will take you to this page
http://shop.sew-classic.com/206x13-S...eedles_c46.htm Either size 12 or 14 only.
