I responded to an ad on kijiji someone was selling two old singers for $100. I told them if they didn't sell I'd take one for $25. I wanted a old handcrank I could refinish in either candy apple red or a copper orange for my sewing room. When I got there she gave me both for $25. Sweet! The beds are 31cms so does that make one a model 28, and other a 128? [ATTACH=CONFIG]414021[/ATTACH] |
Both for $25..... that's awesome. I think that the difference between the 28 and 128 has to do with the location of the bobbin winder.... but I'm not sure. There are lots of members that can tell you exactly the difference. Do they both work? Looks like great sewing is in your future.

What a score, both for $25. I'm still looking for a hand crank.
I'm sure the one with the handle on the hand crank and most of the paint on the bed gone is a 28. It looks like the remnents of the decals are Ottoman Carnation used 1891-1902 according to Needlebar. The other looks to be La Vencedora decals used 1912-1930 on both 28 and 128. I'm not sure how to know the difference. |

The main change was with regard to the location of the bobbin winder. The 127K and 128K models had the bobbin winder located higher up to allow the rubber tyre to run on the belt rather than the wheel rim. However this was not a clean changeover and some earlier 27K and 28K's were already using the new design of bobbin winder before the re-numbering of the models. As with the earlier models, the 128 was a 3/4 scale version of the 127. |

Incidentally, if you can't get replacement decals, make your own using "decal paper" and a picture (preferably vector) of the decal you want. Print it and your cheapo machines can look like new! The wooden bases are even easier. I'm sure this has already been covered by others here. Two for $20 is remarkably good value for machines averaging a century old. Well done NL Quilter! Mike |

I have the 28 completely stripped down and ready to start sanding. I think it will be easy to strip, 110 year old paint seems to chip off easy with just the tip of the screw driver.
