201-2 motor question revisited

Hello all,
Well I finished the 201-2 refurb and it's up and running. While not a perfect job, it's a far cry better than when I first received it. The issue with the missing fiber washer was resolved by me fabricating one. This is my first teardown on a potted motor and required some wires to be replaced due to age and all in all I think the machine is in better shape now. I will do some piecing to put it through it's sea trials. Chow for now. Soman2 TOR |
It is great to see someone who can make their own parts. Wish we all were that good.

Looks really good. And that it works is even better. Nice work.

Oh, boy, that is a beauty. You have made a sad looking machine look so very, very pretty. It looks new.

Looks great, good job.

What material did you use for your washer?

I used fiberflex gasket material and a gasket maker kit to punch out the washers. You could go to an automotive supply house and purchase a small sheet of fiber gasket material. The thickness is about 1/32" and seems to work:thumbup:. I found no thickness specification so it's a guessestimate on my part. I think the purpose is to separate the steel portion of the armature from the bronze bearing in the housing. Hope this helps.

I happen to have one of these apart at the moment. Here's a couple pictures of the washer that's on mine.
The first picture I have pulled it out a little, the second it's pressed up against the commutator. |
Thanks for the pics:thumbup:. The washer looks to be about .010 thick. Mine is about .032. The flat on the shaft allowed me to use a little thicker shim. When I tightened up the first of the 2 screws on the spiral gear with my shim in place, I don't think a minor difference in thickness matters as the shift of the brushes on the commutator is very small and the machine runs like new.

Great information. I haven't had the nerve to open up the potted motor on my 15-91. I've followed the old "if it ain't broke...." maxim. Good to know that one can be fabricated.
