And, the last one today, the 27. Nope didn't bring this one home either. But the days not over yet!

Gorgeous condition. Do bring it home!

Oh man, you two. I didn't know. I'm new to this, remember? I turned the wheel and it works. It's not frozen. But no shuttle or bobbins, hand crank or anything like that. So $30 isn't too much?

Did you look under the slide for the shuttle? Hand cranks can be had for around $20>00

The holder (?) for the shuttle is there, and it moves easily. Nothing under the machine. The box that it was sitting on is empty and is for something completely different. I noticed on one of the parts websites, the complete shuttle assembly can be had for around $40.00.

I'll look at that site to see if they have the hand cranks too.

The pheasant decals aren't common. Based on the heads I've seen, pheasant decals generally do not take well to time and grime, making this one (I feel)exceptional.
I paid $30 for a Tiffany 115 head, with bed decals worn off in the hand position. It's very smooth! I added a vintage hand crank, $50, and put it in an almost period 301 cabinet, $20.

If you love it, and you can afford it, (and possible future investment for a shuttle, bobbins, hc), it isn't an unreasonable price.

Be careful, though. You might end up buying a parts 27 and decide to refurbish both... ask me about my 3 RedEyes.

ETA: I believe the cabinet with my 115 is a 306, not a 301.

Well, what your decision?? The day may not have been over when you made your post but is now the next day and I am excited to know what you decided?

She's home! Light isn't very good, but she's here. When I got up this morning I had already decided that I didn't need to get it yet. And then I read the latest posts and when my DH said the shuttle system is so cool. Off we went.

I was afraid we'd be too late. I raced back to the spot in the antique mall where she was and grabbed her.

Didn't mean to keep anyone in suspense, but when I tried to post earlier, my computer was warning me about a possible virus, so I had to shut it down, and etc.

I'm so excited, can't wait to slowly work on her too. Thank you everyone. I have to make this quick, but I'll keep checking in, posting updates and asking questions. Unfortunately, now I have to clean the house for company! What a horrible time for them to visit! haha.

I've already started my list of things to look for and order!

I will also gladly take suggestions and ideas too, if anyone sees anything right away, that I should look for, do first... :)

The 27 has a spoon shape metal piece below the tension assembly. This predate the tension assemblies that had a pin in the center which released the tension when the presser foot was lifted. Therefore, one needs to press that metal piece to release the tension to remove the fabric.

Uhhh...yeah. Like the time I bought a treadle Pheasant 27... then immediately found another in better condition... and decided to portable case and hand-crank it...and when I got the hand crank and handwheel-engaging bobbin winder by buying a Sphinx 27, I decided that machine needed to keep its hand crank and bobbin winder and then I had three more machines. *sigh*

Sewing machine oil for cleaning the exterior & oiling interior moving parts
Metal polish to clean the easily removable exterior parts like face plate, inspection tags, slides, feet
"0000" steel wool to gently polish up the handwheel if the metal polish isn't enough
Cotton swabs
Cotton string or yarn to use to clean the needle and presser bars with the metal polish (a dab of polish on the bar, thread string around behind, cross ends in front, and pull left, then right, repeat)
Caution: rubbing alcohol if you feel the underside mechanisms needs to be cleaned. Do not get on or near the top side of the machine! It will dissolve the clear coat and spoil your beautiful head.
You may want a few spool pin felts, a bobbin winder tire, perhaps a vintage ruffler and or other feet, and, of course, the Singer puzzle box for storing those feet.

I'm just "pickled tink" (more than tickled pink). Can't wait to get started. Janey and WIChix, I've taken screen shots of the info so I can print it out and have it handy.

WIChix I don't know how I came to see a picture of a puzzle box, but I was drooling over them this morning with my first cup of coffee.

And now my DH thinks its a good idea to go find a different one so I/we can practice on it. Whoopee! He's been corrupted too!

There are 11 or 12 different styles of puzzle boxes. They vary by age, style of closure (latch or spring), no (or has) thumb indent, included attachments, positioning of attachments, and how the attachments are held in place.
Regardless, all puzzle box attachments are short shank, and will fit your 66 , 27, 15, 201, 99. (I'm not sure, some of the hemmers may be bed mount in some versions). If you find one reasonable...$20?, it's a good buy. I think they typically sell for more, just because of the cool factor!

WIChix, The puzzle boxes are so cool! I've seen a number of them for sale. Man, the prices vary and not just for the condition or the contents either. Some of the prices are ridiculous.

If I understand correctly, certain numbered kits were made to go with certain type of machine? Even though the majority of the machines are low shank and use the same foot.

I did see one box, looks in beautiful condition, not complete, but close. Has a thumb indent, so a later one. $50.00. I can't, but it's so cool!

At http://needlebar.org/main/puzzles/index.html it shows which puzzle boxes are for what machines. The IF or Improved Family was the precursor to the Model 15 which would have the round bobbins. The VS or Vibrating Shuttle machines would include the VS2, VS3, 27 and 28 machines which would have the long shuttle bobbins. Both IF & VS machines use low shank feet. The feet will work on the 66, but there was not a puzzle box for it. The 24 is a chain stitch machine and the attachments would be mounted to the bed of the machine and do not have different feet to be changed. Only the shirring plate and underbraider for the IF and VS would be bed mount.
