301 in Cabinet or Is This a Desk Makeover?

Or is it even a 301?

Here is the ad on Craigslist:

I have not seen a sewing machine cabinet like this before. Is it an original, or has someone creatively made a regular desk into a sewing cabinet?

I am far from being an expert on these things but it sure looks like a desk to me. Whoever cut out the opening for the machine put it farther back than I would have liked. I like my machine a little closer to me. I guess if you have the room for a piece of furniture that large it would be okay.

I say:

Yes, it's a Singer 301

~and~

Yes, it's a desk someone modified. (But i like it. Lots of storage space.)

~and~

His price is extremely optimistic.

201 in a similar desk. Mine was not modified and came in it. I think it is a newer Singer desk and the look is cute but the quality is not as nice as some of the older desks tables sewing machines come in. It does have a good amount of storage. I do think it is way over priced but that is based on where I live. Whenever I see reference to internet prices I already go on. they can ask all kinds of things on the internet but what it sold for is a different story. Also this does not look like a pristiner machine or desk. Also has it been serviced or cleaned? Some of the more pricey black 301 online have. Not that I would pay for that as DH does it for our machines.

It's actually a Singer 319, not a 301. :)

LOL...nooooo. None of the above. It's a 306. There are no levers like on the 319, so it's a 306. Definitely NOT a 301.

I don't believe it's an original Singer cabinet. But you can double check here http://www.ismacs.net/singer_sewing_..._cabinets.html

I think the ISMAC cabinet list only goes to the 60's or so...and I think the desk is a later model cabinet. It's not a desk that someone has modified, it's an actual sewing machine cabinet....my guess would be from the 70's or 80's.

If it's a Singer cabinet, and I suspect it is, it will have "Singer" or "Simanco" on it somewhere.

A few months ago I missed out on a Rocketeer in a desk for $25.00. A day too late. Similar to the one posted here, but an older looking desk. Don't know if it came in the desk or if the desk was modified to fit. But I sure did like it.

Candace,

You are right! I emailed the seller to verify and received the response that it is a 306W. We have a tan colored 306 at our guild charity quilt workroom that I love. Somehow in black, I didn't recognize it!

Wow, that sewing cabinet brings back memories. I recognize it as the same one my grandmother had when I was little, I think there was a Necci in it. It functioned as a desk and held her phone when not in use for sewing. I remember well flipping those metal handles up and down while squirming for a dress fitting (I hated the pins sticking me!). I think her machine was purchased in late 1950s.
