66-16 electrical problem
 

I finally took the morning to start learning about my Singer 66-16. I read the manual! It was pretty clean but I dusted & oiled it, cleaned out a couple of spots and started to think about re-attaching the knee pedal. I haven't figured that out so I need some tips on that. I haven't found anything online for instructions. While the main power cord to the motor is fine, I found a scary problem with the cord from the motor to a black box that seems to be the knee control regulator. bare wires. It was kind of twisted under so I didn't see it until I unwrapped it. SO. How do I fix this? Do I just take it to a small motor repair shop? Is there a youtube I can watch? Is there a good source for the parts? I am having a bit of a panic and disappointment. I haven't even plugged it in to see if the motor worked since I wanted to be sure it was oiled before I tried to run it. I'm glad I didn't start it. I keep trying to put it different places but it doesn't quite work. I'm also missing a screw to hold it on to the slotted bar. Since it's all your fault I'm trying to do this, I really hope you don't mind me being a pest.

GreyQ, You have the infamous aluminum wire with latex insulation cords on that machine. They should be replaced. Their life time is long over.

As I have said so many times, SEW-CLASSIC is your best friend.

They are easy to replace. Just follow the original wiring route, undo the old wires and install the new wires.

I have the lever but not the attachment screw but I think I have one I can use. The pictures help a lot!! Thanks for the info on Sew Classic. I didn't even know what to look for. Wires are scary but I believe in no fear sewing so I better tackle no fear machine repair.

You should be able to remove the foot control from the bracket and use it on the floor. I prefer foot control vs. knee controls anyway and do this to all my machines in cabinets.

Well, SewClassic is out of stock but that's ok as I will order cords for my DS "new" Kenmore. The 66-16's power cord looks new, I think it's a replacement. I guess I need to start cleaning my poor old Standard that had an inch of dust, or what I call a protective coating, on it. I have plenty of sewing to catch up on but I really was looking forward to putting the 66-16 into action.

That may be a good idea, as I haven't used a knee lever in years. I'll add it to my Sew Classic cart as it doesn't have a foot control. Lots of nice feet & a zigzag & buttonholer.

Your photo shows a foot control inside the cabinet. Just slide it out of the bracket.

You don't "need" to buy that cord from Sew-Classic. It's very easy to buy some 18-2 SPT-2 cord and make the piece yourself. That's what I do most of the time.

It's just easier to instal a pre-made cord.

Holy Moly! Candace, that black box IS a foot pedal and with some effort, it did come off!! I still need to rewire it or more likely order a new one. Thanks for all the everyone! I always say, no one starts out knowing everything and I'm starting out knowing nothing.

I have another photo. It's the underside of the plug/motor area. The large cord goes to the foot pedal and has to be replaced as it's badly frayed in the middle of the cord. The other wires look a little dicey although it may be the insulation that looks fuzzy. The inside of the foot pedal looks great, super clean and the connection is easy. I'm not entirely sure about replacing the motor wires but I see the screws to open it up. Any tips? any videos? I'm waiting to get the wire before I open up the motor as I don't want it to get dusty. I am taking pictures as I go that I can refer to if I forget what it looks like originally.
