We're all our own worst critics. If we're not hard on ourselves we don't get better. But still I've made a few pretty serious blunders on this. If I ever start another one I'll do better or at least it'll be a new set of mistakes. :)

Hey! Rodney-lighten up. If you don't, I will not go public with any secrets you want to share with me in the future!! :) You ARE da man!

well, I wasn't offended in the least - I put it out there to encourage others to participate too, even if they didn't already know about it.

I think QB is having technical difficulties - and stuff isn't working quite as expected at time. Don't know if it's my work computer - but my avatar has disappeared . . . spooky - must be getting close to October LOL!!

Rodney 09-25-2014 11:51 AM

Thanks Rodney. Thanks again for getting this out in the open where it really belongs.
I think most of the bigger mistakes are over now.
Rodney

Macybaby 09-25-2014 11:53 AM

I think this is a good thing it went "public" as it appears not all the pm's went were they should. Rodney would have been expecting to get 50 blocks and when only 10 showed up, he'd have wondered what went wrong LOL!!!

oldtnquiltinglady 09-25-2014 12:13 PM

I came back on this afternoon to get the address for mailing the squares, and read some more of the entries--and am laughing out loud at the comment "this will quilt out, right" (whatever the sign is for the approximate statement). I have said and heard that statement a million times. I give quilting lessons a couple times a year, and that is one of my favorite expressions when a new student is agonizing over her cutting or stitching.

Rodney 09-25-2014 12:58 PM

KalamaQuilts your 4 squares just arrived today along with everything else! I love the shirting material, your squares look great!
Thank you very much for your generosity!
Thank you!

My pleasure Rodney. Although I don't envy you your job :) and I'm sorry I couldn't be there for the gathering. Next time!

Rodney 09-25-2014 02:53 PM

There will be others. I wish you could have made it too. Right now I'm thinking after Christmas. The Christmas season tends to be too busy for most people so a little after might be better.

csharp 09-25-2014 05:59 PM

Thanks Rodney for putting this out there for more of us to see it. I must have missed any post about Miriam's daughter-in-law. Miriam has been very kind to me in the past and I will be sending you a 9 patch also. Funny thing is I live in Fort Myers and have a daughter in Indy...Miriam lives in Indy and has a son here my my area..anyway my patch will come cross country to you and then back for Ashleah...my husband is a "brain-stem" stroke survivor, so my prayers go out to them...although this happens to one of our dear loved ones, it affects the whole family in the long run. She sounds like she will do her best to get back her "sunshine". Blessings to all who jump in on this .

Rodney 09-25-2014 06:50 PM

Thank you csharp! I think Ashlea might be the wife of the son in your area, unless Miriam has 2 sons in Florida. I hope you and your husband are well. My father had several strokes over the years before he passed and I've seen what they do to people. There's no such thing as a little one, they're all bad.
Rodney

singerguy 09-25-2014 09:33 PM

this will be my first ever quilt (a history in the making) so you better include mine Rodney (ha ha ha). hope i can make it this weekend in time next week's mailing. thanks Rodney for doing this.

blueheavenfla 09-26-2014 12:07 AM

Since I am mainly a lurker, I am late getting into this. Miriam (and many others) have taught me a great deal so how could I, another Floridian, albeit an
east coaster, not participate? The block will be on the way by Monday. Thanks both Rodneys and all the others in helping plan and put this together.

Miriam, our prayers continue and seem to be being answered considering Ashlea's rapid progress.

Managed to get my nine-patch in the post (airmail) this afternoon. Couldn't cut a straight line to save my life today....figured it out when I was tidying away....I had put my rotary cutter blade on the wrong side (IDIOT!). Nevertheless I managed to put together a reasonable block....extremely wonky siggy and a dog's breakfast of embroidery (thank goodness the back won't show if it makes it into the quilt). Anyway Rodney, here's my very humble contribution, I added the rest of the gumnut/blossom fabric in the packet in case you find a use for it. Everything was washed and starched so shrinkage shouldn't be an issue. Please don't judge all Aussie quilters by my less than brilliant standard. Can't wait to see more block pics and the finished quilt. Love, light and peace to all.

miriam 09-26-2014 01:33 AM

Thank all of you. No there is no such thing as a little stroke. Her's is classed as moderate. She is doing a lot better than they thought she would. My son found a place to rent in Naples near the re-hab for less money a month and all on one floor. The place they were in was in Ft Myers but second floor. The land lady is remodeling some of the new place so that is pretty cool. Ashlea is trying very hard to be her sunshine self. Yesterday my son convinced the rehab place that the 'inmates' should be making dinner or lunch type stuff instead of cake and cookies. He is a chef so he got in there, too and they made mashed potatoes and baked chicken and fed the whole place. He said she couldn't peel the potatoes but is isn't sure she's ever peeled a potato so he had her cut them up. He said there is a man in there who barely moves. Then his family came in with a birthday cake with 94 written on it. It may be her progress is because they are comparing her to the average age stroke patient. She was in good shape before the stroke and that is in her favor.

Rodney 09-26-2014 03:05 AM

Singerguy all the blocks will be included. :) Earthwalker that block looks great! You (like me) are too hard on yourself! Neat flowers and I love the colors.
Thanks for the update Miriam. I think it's great Caleb cooked them dinner. He needs to be careful though. They may not let him leave. :)
Ashlea doesn't need to be little miss sunshine all the time. She's been thru a lot and will be thru a lot more before this is done. It's ok to cry if she feels like it. Same with Caleb. He's going thru a lot too.

mom-6 09-26-2014 04:39 AM

Wow! What a thoughtful project! Unfortunately I will be unable to participate as I am out of state and didn't bring my featherweight with me (for which I've already kicked myself numerous times). However prayers for Ashlea are certainly included.

sdhaevrsi 09-26-2014 05:51 AM

Miriam, the story about your son, the chef, getting in there with the rehab group to help them learn to cook real food makes me smile. Yeah for him! It sounds like he and Ashlea will be a good team as they travel along this path to healing and improvement. I am sure there will be plenty of struggles yet to come, but it sounds as if their attitudes are going to help them make the best of it.

Thanks Rodney, I’m not concerned. I was just having a little fun with the “quilt that out” comment. I’m having so much fun making my first 9-patch blocks, and first ever group participation, that I’m getting a little giddy I guess. Best wishes to Ashlea on her recovery, and tell her thanks for giving me an excuse to play with my antique 1901 Singer 27K2 sewing machine.

My two blocks are going into the mail today.

Those are awesome CD! I'm going to have a job ahead of me doing everyone's work here the justice it deserves! :)
Rodney

EDIT: I forgot to add. I'll probably use Ella (1908 Singer model 27) to treadle the blocks I'm making. The rest will probably be done on my Rodney machine-mainly because trying to do a good job on the bigger project while I'm still learning to treadle wouldn't be a good idea. I need to get more comfortable treadling first. If I screw up a block and have to start over, no big deal. The main quilt is a different story.

Cecilia S. 09-26-2014 11:29 AM

Dear Rodney,

In addition to the marvelous work you are doing in co-ordinating this, I am concerned that you will be left holding the bag with a large shipping bill (whole entire quilt!) and also your materials in the quilt backing, binding, and stuffing.

Not having made a quilt, I do not know how much this will cost you, but I imagine it is significant.

At the risk of becoming unpopular, might I suggest that everyone who sends a block might throw a few dollars in there, to help Rodney offset his out-of-pocket costs?

I will be happy to throw a bit in when I mail mine on Monday. And really, I was just thinking a few $1 bills or a $5, nothing big, just that if everyone throws in $1 or few, Rodney will not be left holding the (empty money) bag.

Just a thought.

Cecilia S. 09-26-2014 11:30 AM

CD, nice job you did on the embroidery!

I’m going to use our 1901 Singer 27K2 Combination Handcrank Treadle machine to make them. I have my print fabric strip ready to cut into blocks, and have loaded the machine with coordinating thread to play with the darning/embroidery foot for my muslin signature block. It’s the foot #86294 that I mentioned in another thread that didn’t work too well for FMQ, but may work better for embroidering text. What a great project to give it a whirl on!

I printed out a variety of fonts on printer paper, clamped the paper into a hoop, and practiced following the letters with no thread in the needle yesterday. It went better than I thought it might. I think maybe I can do it, so I’m ready to thread it up and give it a whirl on my muslin today. Did I mention that I’ve never done embroidery of any kind before?

If my experimenting with embroidery text doesn’t turn out, I’ll make the blocks, hand-write the center block, get them sent in, and quit fooling around with the darning foot for now.

CD - I dug around and found a little foot like the one in your picture but I haven't figured out how to get it onto a machine. What is it suppose to do???

Rodney 09-26-2014 12:11 PM

I'm not too worried about it Cecelia. I don't want to name people because there's money involved but at least one person already has sent extra and I know of at least one other that offered to help that way too. Besides I think it will fit in a flat rate box so shipping won't be bad anyway. If it turns out there's extra money it will go to Ashlea and Caleb. I'm sure they'll be able to put it to good use.
Thank you,
Rodney

I washed out on the embroidery. My foot didn’t work on my machine. What you see is hand-written permanent ink for my signature, not embroidery.

It simply replaces the needle clamp. Take your needle clamp completely off and install the foot loosely onto the needle bar like a needle clamp. Then wiggle your needle into the foot by putting the point down through the hole, grasp the needle with the other finger and thumb, slide the needle on down and then back up into the needle bar and foot/needle clamp, and tighten the foot to the needle bar like you do a regular needle clamp.

LOL. Well, that explains why it looks as neat as hand-done lettering! ;-)

I am not a part of the guru clan therefore understandably not pre-invited to participate in this care package, but I am a benefactor of Miriam's and other QB members responses, therefore I whipped this 9-patch up this morning to send along. It will be on it's way in the mail this afternoon. My blessings to Ashlea for a quick recovery.

xxxxxxxxxx 09-26-2014 12:40 PM

Finally was able to load a photo.

I tried and tried to fallow instruction's. I finally found some cotton muslin. The type you"d use as a embroidery backing or lining in a garment ... Think of sewing spandex

I did get 9 patches

one of muslin

over all size at time of mailing is 9 1/4"

It should be there today ..

I'm not saying it's 9 pieces of fabric

or that the lines match up..
I did try do do something to hide the bad workmanship LOL..

Not long ago I posted photo's here of 4 /5 ? denim quilts made in aug. two were given away in aug. In doing this an online friend was giving me ideas of making a denim bag for the quilts.

on e month ago she had her 7th stroke, she calls these mini strokes. ( ya right ) so unknown to her she coached me through a bag and quilt that she will get this coming weekend along with her making a denim quilt herself . she has always sewn her own clothes and her kids but never made a quilt.

she has very limited use of her left side.. I have a huge bag of per cuts ready to go... now if I stop hurting I'll be ready to go . lol...

I sew better than this , just can't make thing fit or line up lines . Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Where gurus? We ALL have so much to learn!!! I know I learn tons around here.... But it is from everybody. Some times it is figuring out problems - other peoples or some times my own problems. Like right above. I have had that little foot around here but never knew what it was. Now I just have to figure out what it is suppose to do... There is no way that little thing can hold down any fabric. Maybe you use it with a foot, too. Surely someone out here knows what to do with it. It is a clever little foot.

No you use it just like CD shows. I have one. I tried to use it on my 201 without success. It's been talked about on the vintage Singer Yahoo group that this foot was designed for use with the FW. Haven't tried it on mine, maybe it will work better. I know they're not too common, I've seen them sell for for lots of $$.

LOTS of $$$$$ hhhmmmm..... if it doesn't work.........

ThayerRags 09-26-2014 01:28 PM

I'm hoping it will work better for embroidery once I come up with a feed dog cover plate for one of my machines. I think that the cover plate will improve the action of the foot. I've got some cover plates, but I can't find them. I don't think it will ever work well for FMQ, even with a cover plate. Too much needle sticking out to move the fabric far enough. Darning requires lots of stitches in a small space, so I think this foot is better suited for darning or embroidery.

CD in Oklahoma

miriam 09-26-2014 01:32 PM

Oh the plate! I have one of them with the little foot thing - don't know how it works either... But won't a foot still go on the presser bar? Or do you just use that thing on the needle?

miriam 09-26-2014 01:46 PM

I wasn't trying to separate anyone out. I just didn't think about the sheer size of the group when I had the idea to surprise Miriam with this project. You're one of the many reasons why I'm so happy this went public. Great looking block!
Thank You!
Rodney

The floodgates are starting to open. 7 packages in the mail today!

It looks like you can mail a block in a regular envelope and only have to pay regular postage so those who haven't mailed yet can save some money that way.

I received packages today from Glenn, Nanna-up-North, zozee, sdhaevrsi, crossstitcher(nice cross stitch center BTW),
liking quilting, and soman2-the other Rodney-today. All the blocks are beautiful!
Thank you everyone!
Rodney

MFord 09-26-2014 08:01 PM

Good to know that about mailing in a regular envelope with only one stamp, because that's what I did! It went out yesterday, from Eastern WA, so you should receive it in Western WA in a week or two at most! I'm afraid I spelled Ashlea's name wrong...with an "H" at the end...so perhaps the "H" can stand for "Happy!" Because I'm sure she is going to be very happy when she sees how many people care for her and for her MIL, Miriam!

Looks like they are well on the way to a quilt, new pillow covers, maybe a tote bag or two, placemats, napkins, kitchen towels,.... and so much more!

Rodney, I think you are just wonderful to do so much to make this happen for Ashlea. Kudos to you!

Rodney 09-27-2014 07:30 AM

I'm not sure how many blocks I have here at this point. A lot of people are sending multiples, enough so that the back may be all blocks as well. I'll wait until all or at least most of them are here to start.
Right now signed blocks get priority for the front. Roserips suggested sashing in between when we were talking about doing this and I agree, the individual blocks will stand out more and it will make it easier to fit all the blocks together.
There's still a lot undecided that will have to wait until all the blocks are here.

I just got back from the post office.

Rodney 09-27-2014 08:33 AM

monopas 09-27-2014 09:20 AM

Despite the havoc and chaos here, I am bravely going to use the newest machine in the house (Pfaff 1222se from the 80's that actually can go slow) and attempt to sew the blocks myself. Maybe the magic of the IDT and West German engineering will bless my first sewing project.

Or I'll send you the resulting mess for a good laugh.

J Miller 09-27-2014 09:34 AM

Rodney,

I'll have two squares in the mail Monday. Been trying to get them done and to you, but we're still in a mess from the flooded basement. I couldn't find my fabric stash so I had to use left over squares from the quilts and whacky bags.

I sent you an email, did you get it? If not let me know before Monday.

Joe
