99k rust issue?

This is a cute little machine I got back in November from Goodwill Online. Life has interfered with cleaning it up until today.

I'm a little bit concerned about the foot pedal. The cords and plug look ok to me (don't think they are original, but older), but the foot pedal has quite a bit of rust on it.The outside of the machine is pretty clean, but when I took off the face plate the machinery looked like it might have a little rust on it as well - no picture as I cleaned most of it off already.

I haven't tested the machine to see if it will run because I didn't have a base for it - but my DH built me one over the weekend so I think I'll check it tomorrow.

I'm just a little concerned about the rust, though. Should I take the motor apart to see if it's got any? I've never done that before - new treat I guess.

Suggestions, my friends?

clean the rust off and see if the machine sews

I really enjoy taking things apart and cleaning the rust off. Shinny bits make me happy. Putting the puzzle back together makes me proud. My friends think I am crazy.

I'm a worry wart too. I'd check the inside of the pedal to see what condition it's in before running it. It might only be surface rust from bare metal being exposed.

Looks pretty normal to me. The one or two foot pedals I have that are the same are rusted there too. You live on the dry side. You're not as used to rust as I am I guess. I'm guessing it's just surface rust. Clean the foot pedal off and repaint it. It should be fine.

I forgot to add: Please include some pictures of it in it's new base. :)

That little bit of surface rust on your controller is from use. Nothing to worry about. Clean it, oil it up, check the wiring and if that's good plug it in and start sewing.

Joe - bit by bit that New Home could be spiffed up again - is this a current project of yours? do you have 'after' clean up pics on this one?

miriam 02-17-2015 02:36 PM

I agree - that New Home could be spiffed.

Ok, Joe, you win! We don't get much rust, or mold, either here on the dry side! Can I use Naval Jelly or should I get something fancy to clean it off?
