Just to add something here: I've put a bobbin washer into the 201 bobbin case and it's made an amazing difference: no more tension problems, and my FMQ is improving rapidly!

I had the same trouble with my 201 when trying to FMQ. I had much better luck with a Singer 66. On my 201, the larger screw is the one closest to the front of the machine.

I have never used a bobbin washer. I will give them a try, curious how well they will work in the other Singers.

Since I posted, I've tried a different thread in the 201. The bobbin washer really helped with a machine quilting thread, but when I changed to a finer one, I had to take it out.
