Not sure if this machine is considered an Antique but since it is a Singer 221 clone, I will ask my question.
I purchased a lot of sewing notions, fabric, and this machine from a quilter's estate. My daily machine is in the shop for her yearly spa day so I was cleaning and oiling this machine just for fun. Her motor sounds good and strong, all moving parts have been oiled or greased as required but I cannot get her to sew! See picture: big birds nest ! I changed and rewound bobbin, changed needle, changed top thread. Hoping someone here can help! thank you! |
That always happens to me when the top thread is either not threaded correctly or the tension is way wrong (too loose). Also make sure the finger of the bobbin case in in place under the needle plate.
Just a few thoughts.... |
Also, is your needle inserted correctly? The flat side of the needle should be facing left, so you would thread from right to left.

Success!
thank you Joe Ayres and quiltedsunshine for your suggestions. After a good night's sleep and a couple of cups of coffee I re-checked all the oil and grease spots, cleaned a little fuzz ball I had missed behind the bobbin case, re-threaded the machine following the diagram step-by-step and VOILA! she hummed through 100+ stitches with no problems!
I took a pic of the beautifully perfect straight stitches but I can't upload due to size limits... thank you once again! |
So glad you got that beautiful little machine sewing!
