Any advice for a new Featherweight owner?
 

A friend of mine gave me her grandmothers machine that has sat in a garage for the past 15 or so years. I know nothing about these adorable machines. I am taking it in to be serviced on Monday. Can someone link a site or tell me about the history of these machines? Thank you.

The best advice For sewing on my FW came from my OSMG is to:
1. Hold the threads and put the needle down into the material when you start to sew.
2. When you stop a seam, raise the needle to the highest position before taking out the fabric.
Both of these habits virtually eliminates the thread jamming in the bobbin. I was taught to do this when I first started sewing, but got out of the habit with the new electronic machines. I hope you love your FW as much as I do mine!

Never turn the flywheel backwards. Always turn it forwards. It messes up the bobbin.

If it does not come with the manual, go to the Singer website and download one. It's important to oil regularly, learn how to thread it correctly and keep it lubricated. You will LOVE her. There are tons of informational sites online about the Featherweight. Just Google Singer Featherweight.

When you take it in to be serviced, make sure you ask the repair person if there's anything he/she can show you that you can do yourself, like how to oil it, how to change certain parts, etc.

Make sure you use oil in the oil spots and lubricant in the 2 grease pot spots. If it's been setting up for a while, the grease wicks might need changing.

I have two and don't sew on anything else

Also make very sure that your repair tech knows how to work on a Featherweight.
