Any ideas on glue?

I just got a Singer 500 and the cord is damaged. The cord is actually functional and the wires are still in place but the molded part of the cord is split open. I would like to glue it and possibly use some shrink tape over that for reinforcement. I'm not sure what kind of glue would be best for this. The break is a clean tear through the rubber so if I use the right thing I am hopeful for a good repair.

Any ideas what I should use?

I would consider "Barge Cement"

I have some of that so I'll go read the cardboard. I can't even tell if the material is vinyl, pvc, rubber, plastic or nylon. Probably not PVC, I'm not sure how far that application goes back.

Thanks Steve.

I would use black RTV for a temporary fix. Then as soon as was convenient I'd replace the cord assembly. Joe

Sugru might be a good choice.

The thing that I like about barge cement is that although it cures completely, it does not harden. It also can be applied underwater....

It was literally designed to glue rubber bumpers to barges

Steve, I think that's going to be my best bet. I'll glue it now and secure it with a rubberband overnight.

BTW, the Black RTV would work well too. I just do not know how well it would stick to the original.

I would agree with Joe and replace the cord or at least the plug when the option is available

Christy,

I'd probably try building up the area layer by layer using liquid tape. It's a great product, I've been using it for years to repair nicks in wires.

you can buy a new cord from sew-classic
