Anyone know what model this Singer is?

This Singer is for sale on my local Craigslist for $100. It looks like it's missing the bobbin and bobbin plate. Other than that it looks in pretty good shape. The people selling it said it belonged to the hubby's mom. The wife is a garment sewer and no one in the family wants it. She said she'd look for the 2 missing items but doesn't know if it sews. I'm going to look at it tomorrow but would like to know what model it is so if she doesn't find the missing pieces I can see how hard they are to replace and how much to counter offer...thanks for any help you can give...

It looks like a 28 to me, but I am new to these vintage machines so you may want to wait for someone more knowledgeable to verify.

Thanks Clare. I went online and from the pics I see it looks to be a 28K which is 3/4 size correct? I've emailed the lady and asked for the serial number so I can look it up. I want to find out how hard it will be to find the missing bobbin and plate cover...

Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for making this a good deal or not???

Its a beauty!!

She just sent me the serial number. Looks like it was manufactured in 1898...

Pretty machine. The shuttles, bobbins and slide plates come up on ebay fairly frequently (we snagged a slide plate for one of ours a little bit ago.) At $100 in that condition I'd say it was a very good deal but expect to pay another $10 each for the things that are missing if you're not willing to sit and wait (which pretty much describes me :)

Thanks for the feedback pinkcastledh. She sent me another pic and it looks like there is a bobbin with it. We have a repair shop here in town that carries almost everything under the sun. I'm thinking I may be able to find a plate there...hopefully. Listen to me! It sounds like I already own the thing! We'll see tomorrow!

Good luck! Our local repair guy said that he can get them but that they'd be quicker to get off ebay and probably less expensive. They're a little shorter than the ones for the 27/127 but otherwise those will fit if you just need something that will cover the opening. Also be sure to check in the cubbyhole under the hand crank and in the recess beneath the machine. One of our machines was sold as not having the plate but it was under the machine all the time :)

Ok thanks! I recently bought a treadle and found $34 in an envelope underneath it...:)

Diannia, I'm twitterpating with anticipation to see if you purchased this beauty!!! (isn't "twitterpating" a great word? even if it isn't in a dictionary!)

I'm sure you can get the missing parts from Sew-Classics. I have a 27 treadle, and just ordered the front throat plate, a belt, some extra bobbins, etc. They carry most everything, prices are reasonable and shipping is super fast!

Beautiful machine, a steal at $100. Grab it quick

OH thanks for the encouragement! I texted the lady and postponed looking at it till Monday. If I look tonight I'll be rushed and I 'm off on Monday so can take more time. I'll let you all know!

I have one just like it, with a treadle base to go with it. If you need numbers or anything let me know. Geesh it's going to be a long weekend at your place. LOL I don't know if I could wait that long. Good Luck!

I have its twin, here only mine is in a treadle. I have too darn many sewing machines, but I'm keeping this one because I fitted it with a hemstitcher attachment and it works BEAUTIFULLY with a treadle machine. I have one for my 15-91's, too - but those are so darn fast that you're struggling to keep the fabric lined up while the hemstitcher is chugging along. Katie-bar-the-door! With the treadle, you can place each pierce and stitch exactly where you want it. :)

I had hand-crank one with Rococco decals and in perfect condition, so I gave that one to a granddaughter. A second one with Victorian decals went to my new daughter-in-law. I'm still hoping to find a 28 with the colorful "La Vincedora" decals. Meanwhile, I keep buying them, fixing them up and passing them along to someone who will love them. :)

For those of you waiting to hear...I got it today!!!

thepolyparrot 11-12-2012 05:59 PM

Ah Miriam, it's a good thing I don't live in Indy, any more or that little baby would go missing - she would trot herself right over to my house. :D

Diannia, that's terrific! I hope you have a lot of fun playing with it. I love cleaning them up and getting them going, again - some days, I'd rather do that than actually sew. :)

miriam 11-13-2012 05:43 AM

My fun is taking an utter derelict and
making it run. Once it runs, i'm not
even sure what to do with it.

I don't know, either. They're stacking up around here! I'm going to list some of them on craigslist to make some room, though. Just got to fit that in around my sewing and doctor visits and general craziness. :)

If you ever want to sell your "Vinnie," pm me and let me know more about it. :)
