Anyone used a vintage sock darner?
 

I am looking for a sock darner to use on my 15-91. I have seen two types, one with what looks like a simple hoop and a different one that has clamps to hold the sock out of the way while you darn. Has anyone used either type? Pros and cons? Source besides EBay?

My vintage sock darner is a wooden egg shaped thing with a handle. Oh, and lots of paint scratches where the needle did a too close bypass. The darner holds the thing in one hand and darns with the other. Very vintage!

No I've never used one, but would love to have one for my vintage machines.

one that looks like to toe of shoe on a handle (wooden also).

Linda, My dh recently bought me a 15-91 in an art deco cabinet at our local lower end "antique" mall. We had seen it while walking through the mall and I thought it was a bit pricey. But then we looked in the drawers and it had all kinds of attachments/feet. Still, it was a surprise to me when it showed up on Valentine's Day. In the drawers were two darners. One looks just like the one Joe Miller is talking about .... oval with clamps to hold the sock. The other is the simple hoop one you mentioned. Sorry to say I have not tried either one of these yet as I am still working on cleaning up the machine. Anyway, the smaller one with the clamps describes as a "stocking and socks darner". The larger oval one says it is for "flat darning". So I am guessing that the second one is for mending holes in flat items like shirts, pants, etc.? Two different devices for two different types of darning would be my guess? Don't know that any of this helps you but there you go!

Well, you really got me researching these darners. Hope some of this helps especially the last review. Again, it looks to me like it depends on what kind of darning you want to do .... socks or fabric pieces (shirt, pants, etc.)

I have a Singer stocking darner with the clamps. Sorry to say I have never tried to use it so I cannot offer advice. My instructions are missing the first few pages so I don't have the copyright date to know how old it is.

My instructions say "Copyright U.S.A., 1923, 1927, 1933, 1935, 1938 and 194, by The Singer Manufacturing Company" :)
