Bega Sewing Machine (J 52663)
 

Just acquired a new (old) sewing machine and can't find any information on it. Does anyone know anything about these machines? It was purchased from a shop here in Charleston (Margiotta's Sewing) and has that name in gold on the front. The lady who owned it died in 1975 and her son just gave it to me. Its a beautiful machine, in great shape. Just wonder about its history!! Your machine is what we call a 15 clone. It is a very close copy of the Singer Model 15 made in Japan. Many many millions of them were imported from the late 40s to the 60s by dozens of Japanese companies, and sold under hundreds of names. They are still made today by Indian and Chinese companies.

There is no comprehensive list of who made what and / or when with these machines. Some are marked like the Juki made HOTHER that's my avatar picture.
Others will have a J- A number on them that will tell the manufacturer and yet others will have no markings at all.
Some like Brother made machines will have "BROTHER" prominently cast in the underside of the bed.

They are usually excellent sewing machines a very much capable of most any straight stitch task you'd ask of them.

Thank you! It has the J-number on it, but I didn't look any further than that. When I get home today, I'll give it a closer look to see if there is anything else written on the bottom. Again, thank you for the quick response!

If you'll post the J- number I have a chart I can tell you who made it. Not when though.
There is a Japanese Made Machines group on Yahoo you can join. They have lots of info but you have to have a Yahoo acct to join.

Cool machine.

It has the look of a Spartan to me. If it is, it is a wonderful sewing machine, nice and quiet like I like 'em. They are so simple, and easy to show GKs how to sew with an electric sewing machine. The only thing about them to me, though, is their weight--and HEAVY is an issue with me anymore. Please let us know what you find out.
