Belt on Singer Red Eye Treadle machine
 

I've had my machine for awhile now but it needs belt. I have the belt but don't know how to determine the length needed--don't want to cut too short or how to fasten the ends together. I really want to try my baby out but need to do this to proceed.

If I'd read Dick's instructions instead of working it all out myself (especially his ice pick + block of wood tip), I'd have many less holes in my fingers. If you don't have an ice pick, an awl/stiletto will do nicely, or even an old machine needle + pliers to get through the leather.

Thanks for these links. Hubby picked me up a 1922 Red Eye treadle in June. It needs a belt. I'll read up on how to measure so I know what I need to order.

Thanks for the links. Now I just need to get brave enough to put the new belt on. The old one is still there but no longer joined and it looks like someone tried to sew it together with thread.

You could always do a test belt like get a piece of nylon clothesline fit it on your treadle like youre really going to use it, measure/cut and get it working. Then just nip it off once you have it working. ;-)

I use cheap waxed dental floss and a large eyed tapestry needle to sew my treadle belts together. I don't have any luck using the staple that comes with the belts. Changing a treadle belt shouldn't be a scary thing, its very simple. http://www.treadleon.net/sewingmachi...eadlebelt.html
I use 2 clothes pins to hold the belt, so that it doesn't fall down while I'm trying to fit the belt.

Here is how I do a quick Silicon hose setup to work on machines. I give them Leather belts once all of the bugs are worked out.

Here is a Howe Model B with no belt. To complicate matters there are two issues;
1. The Howe B has the drive wheel below the bed.
2. Some Yutz in the past replaced the Howe base wheel with a singer.... grrrr

The Pic just show the original bobbin winder in place but the "retro" wheel is too small to reach it.

I start by cutting a short length and cutting it up one side

here is it stuffed in one side.

Here it is in both. The hose is just drawn around until it is as tight as you would like it the snipped.

Final step is to stitch both side of the hose together. Any stitch pattern seems to work.
and the belt is on.
