bernina 830 question
I have one of the original 830's and I need to replace the plastic gear. I have the gear and ordered what I thought was a repair manual (it isn't). I can see how to replace it except how to take the plastic housing off the back to get to the pin through the gear. Does anyone know how to this or where I might find instructions. I don't want to harm this machine. It has been the best machine I have ever owned.
Thanks in advance!!! Lynda |
Try posting your question in the Vintage Sewing Machine section. There are lots of people there who know how to work on vintage machines and also your not-yet-vintage machine.

I do know when a gear is replaced the timing needs to be checked and probably reset. Be sure and get instructions for doing that too. Have you tried youtube? I found many machine repair videos there before.

Bernina guards their repair manual so I doubt if you will find one online or in print. I agree, try posting in the "Vintage & Antique Machine Enthusiasts" and someone there might be able to help you. I am still quilting on my Bernina 1530 that I bought in the 90s.

Have you done this before on other machines and do you have experience timing machines and dealing with pendulum swing, worm gear issues? If not, I wouldn't use this machine as a learner. There are better machines to practice on. I've changed the gears on these models quite a few times and it's still not an easy task for me.

Well I figured it out and replaced the gear. I didn't see an issue with timing but plan on running it to see. The gear that was broken didn't have much to do except run he decorative stitches. I thank all of you for your suggestions if I have a problem I will no where to check!!

Ask a machine repair or tech to order a basic repair manual for you. Most will for extra $.
