Blessed with a 301A!

Someone just blessed me with a 301A for free! The decals are in great condition and it appears to have been used very little. It has the bobbin and bobbin case but no attachments. The surface paint has slightly discolored spots on the tan paint. Is this caused from mold? I haven't had it long enough to even oil her and try it out but I'm really excited about getting her up and running. Also, is the bobbin the same as the one for a Featherweight? Thanks for your help

Daylesewblessed 03-13-2012 12:57 PM

Congratulations! Yes, the bobbin and bobbin case are the same as for the FW. The 301 is a slant machine, so the feet are not the same as the FW. However, they are the same as other Singer slant machines of that era and are not hard to find.

Happy quilting!

Dayle

I have a black 301a and just Love Love Love her!! She is my standard piecer machine now.

The spots might come out...just clean gently with sewing machine oil. Some other people here have found the same spots and they were able to remove them.

The attachments are easy to find. I found a whole box of attachments for mine on eBay.

You are just going to love her. I have three and am in 301 heaven. LOL

I don't have a 301 yet, but am watching for one! :) Congrats!

Mizkaki on this board is going to have attachments at better prices than ebay! :)

Oh, it's exciting to read of your love for your 301s. I tested the knob to adjust the feed dogs and that seems frozen so we'll have to try to release that. My hubby recently restored a Kenmore that had frozen up near the pulley and our friend used a gear puller to loosen up. Hopefully, we'll have the same success with the feed dog knob. My sewing ministry at our church was given six vintage machines today by a very generous person. Three of the machines are in the bentwood cases. Two have not even been opened because the keys are missing. The third has a spindle bobbin. Two machines are in cabinets and I think one is the two tone 301. The second one in the cabinet is a green Necchi. We have a lot more to discover about these beautiful machines. Does the 301 have a serial number?

Congratulations! You will love this machine. They are very nice to sew on.

301 serial number is on the bottom of the machine

mollysmom2004 03-14-2012 04:15 AM

I just purchased a 301A long bed about 2 weeks ago. I found bobbins, light bulb, and walking foot at www.sew-classic.com. Everything I ordered came very quickly. It did not have the owner's manual but I went to the Singer website and downloaded it for free. She sews like a dream. I can't wait to quilt on it.

SunlitenSmiles 03-14-2012 04:26 AM

The serial number is on the bottom near the bobbin

the knob to lower the feeddogs is difficult to turn by hand but there is a slot in the middle of the knob for a screwdriver and then it turns easily....please do not use a power tool, my 301A begged me to key this reply quickly.

gypsyatheart,

A very small flat blade screw driver will open those bent wood cases.

Opening cases like that is a treasure hunt. You really never know what you're gonna find.

My husband, who is quickly turning into a sewing machine mechanic, got the cases open. They both have the spindle bobbins. The two machines in the cabinets are a Nechii Supernova, which is a bit stiff yet, and a Singer 404. It is in almost perfect condition and has a beautiful, straight stitch, even though it is still loosenly up. She'll be a beautiful addition to our sewing ministry. Thanks so much for all your help!

Glenda, tell us how did you manage to get three 301. I'm having a hard time finding one at a cheaper price than E-bay sellers want.

miriam 03-15-2012 02:22 AM

there are some on CL in Mesa, AZ

tenngal 03-15-2012 09:50 AM

There were several 301's on the Nashville CL this week. I got mine from there and love it.

Our vintage Singers are from 1918, 1936, and 1948. Hey, one is younger than me!!

I have a Feather Weight and a 301 that sit side my side. Just realized the other day that they don't share feet, but bobbins they do share. I have all the attatchments for both machine. They are amazing work horses. You will love your new treasure.

gypsyatheart43 03-16-2012 10:04 AM

We're making progress on the 301A. Hubby got the feed dogs to move. After letting it soak up the sewing machine oil for a couple of days, I tried a few stitches and she sews beautifully. She's still a little clinky above the needle but is running much more quietly than she did during our first try. I'll have to live with the discoloration in the finish, I think, but the signs of rust are gone. She still needs a little more cosmetic cleaning. I love that she has a handle. Such a blessing!
