Bobbin Trouble
 

I bought some plastic class 66 bobbins from sew classic and have been using them with no problem in my 328k. I finally bought a replacement bobbin winder for my 1931 Singer 66 and I've tried winding 2 bobbins. One end of the first bobbin snapped off while winding. The second one wound all the way and then I couldn't get it off the winder. My husband had to help and it turns out the bobbin cracked and warped. Is this winder winding them too tight (as it appears) or do I need to use metal bobbins? If the former how do I fix it?

Have you tried using metal bobbins on the new winder? Plastic ones are not really recommended orf the old machines.

I would stick with metal bobbins for a vintage machine but I am no expert. I do know with my computerized viking which does use plastic bobbins I need to wind slowly or I have issues with them getting stuck on the winder.

The metal ones are only about $.65 each, and work a ton better in the older machines.

Getting good bobbins is getting to be a problem. I use a sidewinder to wind bobbins - it works and is quick...
I had a bobbin problem a couple days ago. It was a new bobbin. The machine would sew just fine then all of a sudden it would jam. I probed and cleaned and probed and basically went over the whole bobbin area over and over - then I looked at the bobbin. There is a seam where the post comes together - it was rough and the thread was snagging on it.

I like metal bobbins in metal bobbin cases, I like the weight of them and I adjust my tensions with metal bobbins in mind,
That said, metal bobbins should only be in metal bobbin cases. Plastic can go in either plastic or metal bobbin cases. I just find them unpredictable in metal vintage bobbin cases.

Tammi, some of those metal bobbins might as well be traded in for plastic - the plastic ones are made better.

Ummm... the plastic ones wear out around the edges, and should be replaced regularly.

Really? I guess we never used any one bobbin enough to cause it to wear out.
