Cabinet questions

Two Singer cabinets:
One blonde [ATTACH=CONFIG]500534[/ATTACH] One brunette [ATTACH=CONFIG]500535[/ATTACH] Same design. Questions, Are they made from the same wood? Can the blond one be sanded and stained to be like the brunette one Anyone try to restore the finish on a blond cabinet with Glenn's method? If so does it work? Does anyone know the Singer cabinet number of these? I've looked through ISMACS and didn't find it. Thanks. Joe |
Joe, The blond cabinet has been pickled. You will have to strip it to bare wood with a chemical stripper and a strong one at that. If you lucky all the white stain in the grain will be removed. This will be work but it can be done.

Pickled? Not being a wood type person I'm not sure what that means. I think I'll probably just leave it blonde but redo the shellac on it.

Getting the white stain all the way out is a real pain. Lots of sanding would likely be needed.

The blonde one is oak and like Glenn said, pickled. Basically it has a white stain/paint filling the pores. It's one of my least favorite finishes.
The brunette is walnut. That one is one of my favorite woods. You can strip and stain the blonde one darker to the same color as the walnut one but as Glenn said it's a lot of work. Rodney |
Thank you for asking Joe! I am at such a loss as to understanding wood. I can't figure out one from another and I hadn't a clue about "pickling".
I have that same blond cabinet. Your's looks in a bit better condition than mine. I'd lovee to hear how to restore it best too. I can't imagine you would finish the job with the dark furniture wax. ;) |

I actually prefer the "blonde" cabinet! It seems to be in better shape as well.

Both cabinets are in great physical shape. My 201-2 is in the brunette and my 328 is in the blonde cabinet.
Eventually when I have a work room that is cat free and indoors I'll use Glenn's method to redo the surfaces of both. But if I try now any fresh shellac would most likely have cat prints in it. Since their both the same they're kind of like a yin and yang set. Joe |
