Can you help me identify this machine please??
 

This has come up for sale on our local FB group. She is asking $125 for it but Im not sure what model it is. I have contacted her to get me more info and if nothing else the serial number. BTW~the picture is not very good so it is hard to see detail.

It looks very similar to my 128-23, Godzilla or krinkle finish machine. It's a shuttle machine and I must say is LOUD and vibrates A LOT. I don't know if you want it for the pure collector item it is or for use, but although it does a beautiful stitch mine is a decorator piece now. I have so many other vintage machines that don't sound like a tank:> It's my only shuttle machine, so it's neat to have. The one pictured above uses a foot pedal and mine uses a knee bar.

What would one except to pay for it in it current condition??? Candaces is gorgeous, the I am thinking of getting not!! This would not be a machine I used but one I looked at...A LOT!!!:thumbup:

Opinions on this will vary. Mine was a gift and I suspect my mother paid at least what you're contact is asking because she had it shipped. Shipping would cost at least $40 on the machine because of its weight. But, I tend to be a low spender:> I don't want to say cheap, because I have some very expensive machines! But, so many vintage machines need some work, elbow grease and or parts and I won't pay top dollar for one knowing I will typically be spending more money and time fixing them up. It's hard to say, really, by the photo you posted. It's kind of blurry so it's hard to tell what condition it's in and if it's in working condition. I would suggest you offer less than what's being asked unless it's in pristine shape and is something you just have to have.

Thanks for your advice, I was going to offer her something below $100. To have the machine serviced would be $60!! ANd then there is the time to clean it up and looking nice enough to put fabric thru it.

I love my 28K and the sound it makes, but then again, it's a handcrank and not electric. :) Before I made an offer at all, I'd look under that scrap that was used as a pincushion and see how much "pin rash" is there...on some machines it's down to the bare metal.
I don't see a lot of rust, mostly just looks dusty to me..and that's an easy fix. If it were me, I'd offer 50 or 60 dollars for it...but you'd also have to consider that I don't like the Godzillla finish.. :)

it is a nice machine, offer her 60 for it... you can oil and clean it up, that is all the sewing center is gonna do for an old machine, I work on all of mine and have got them all to run well... even the ones that where seized up... go for it.. I have an old domestic krinkled one that is chocolate brown... that i am trying to decide whether to keep of get ride of..

Is that what that white fabric looking thing is near the top of the needle?? Thanks for you help.

I would say $50 is more than fair in that condition! Make sure you can really check it out first. That wiring is old, so look for breaks, bare spots, etc.

Yes. It was common to wrap a piece of thick wool around the arm of the machine to use as a pin cushion. It's the cause of a lot of decal and paint damage to these old girls...

I paid $35 for my 128 that is in far better condition than the one pictured. I haven't sewn on it other than at the seller's house to make sure it worked, so I can't address the noise issue.

If it is what you want, go for it, beauty is in the eye of the beholder/user! Clean it up and use it for awhile if you end up not being happy, I am sure you will make some other "sewing mechanic" super happy. Good Luck on your adventure.

I recently got one of these. Singer 128-23 to be exact. Evidently the 23 relates the wrinkle finish. She is 3/4 size machine, but full in weight!! You will not be taking her to a workshop unless you have been lifting weights recently. Mine has horrible looking wires, and I'm making mine into a hand crank.
Only you can decide if the machine is worth your time and trouble. Good Luck.

Maybe I will offer her $35 and see if she bites. I found out today she has been trying to sell it for months and months and has had no bites. If I can get it for the right price DH and I can work on fixing her up.

Offer $25. Maybe where you live it is worth more, but I know that here, nobody would pay very much for a machine of that vintage.

I think you have received some very good advice here. If you offer a low price, you can always go up if needed. Be sure to take a sewing machine needle with you when you go to try it out. It may not have one in it. I keep a machine needle, 2 small spools of thread, one for bobbin and one for top thread to check the tension, and a small pair of scissors in my purse. You never know when you just might see a machine you want to try out. Good luck, and let us know how you come out on the machine. (I'm a former Michigander, as they used to call it.)

The case looks OK but the machine is not worth nearly as much as they ask. I would hold out for a machine with a reverse and in better condition. Also it seems the crinkle finnish is usually run cheaper and not as desired. Maybe look for a near mint singer 15-91. In our area I see those occasionally for $45-$125 in cabinet.

Unless the camera was not set correctly, that picture was taken 7 years ago. At very least you'd have to see the machine to know what condition it's in. I don't know what's a reasonable price for this model, but it does seem high to me.

Oh My Goodness :eek: I didn't even notice that thanks for pointing it out. She is still out of town so I will not hear anything from her til at least tomorrow.

Incidentally, the krinkle finish quite often means it was made for the military.

I have one just like the one you are looking at. An 18 year old girl sold it to my husband for $40. I belonged to her grandmother and she didn't want it. What a shame! It looked terrible and the case needed repair. He brought it home and announced the new 'present'! I wasn't too thrilled at first but the.....It cleaned up beautiful! We used sewing machine oil on a soft cloth and rubbed it clean being careful not to take off the Singer label. Cleaned up the mechanical workings with WD then oiled it up good. It is quiet and sews beautiful. The wooden case is being redone as we speak. I now have three vibrating shuttle machines and love them. I sew with them on a wooden table with a rubber mat underneath to help them not walk. I take one to my quilt group once in a while to sew with and learned that they will make a modern plastic folding table want to travel right out the door! I say, "sew on it and enjoy the movement and sound". Enjoy!

I agree with your decision. I know I would pass on it also.
