chainstitch

I am fascinated by the Willcox and Gibbs chainstitch machines. And the Singer 24's. I also see a lot of
'toy' sewing machines. Are the toys actually useable? If I wanted to chainstitch a hem in a growing kids pants, would it work?
any other input? are they tempermental? difficult to use? idiot proof?

My hubby has a Wilcox and Gibbs. He loves it , as he doesn't have to mess with bobbins. I think it would work well for hemming. Good luck in your search.
