Cinderella box recovered!

2 Attachment(s)
I acquired this Cinderella from a fella on eBay. The machine works and the paint job is very good but the box was totaled. There was no black "fabric" on the lid and the top of the lid had let go by the time I received it. I glued the top of the lid but didn't nail it, as the wood was very thin and brittle. Then I fashioned a slip cover of fabric that had similiar little flowers to what is painted on the machine on a black background. (Isn't it amazing that I had a piece of fabric that matched? NOT...) I spray painted the base of the box after trimming away the fabric that had peeled away (don't look too close!)
The local sewing machine repairman gave her a once over and made up a cord/foot pedal. I don't know how the seller on eBay could say "it powers up" when there was no cord/foot pedal. NOTE TO SELF: do not assume there is a cord/foot pedal. I requested the seller wrap the foot pedal in bubble wrap for shipping and that is when I found out "there is no foot pedal pictured or mentioned" = no foot pedal.
Another note: I bought this purely for asthetics. The sewing machine repairman said "it's a thrasher" lol! She's LOUD when she runs...not quiet like a featherweight.

Look at her chrome shine! No foot pedal! That's just wrong!

JudyTheSewer 05-14-2013 08:45 AM

Oh, I like that fabric you chose. It is perfect! Nice job.

Quilt Novice 05-14-2013 09:14 AM

She's beautiful. Great job on the box!

kitsykeel 05-14-2013 11:22 AM

I don't think I would mind her being a "thrasher" at all if I could just look at her in all her beauty everyday. Love your fabric for the box top. You have given me an idea for covering one of mine. Was going to decoupage it but I think I like the fabric idea better. Will experiment with fabric first. The bottom I am covering with leather.

Judy,

How did you make the "slip cover" for the box top fit snugly? I've been thinking of doing that for the cases I fix up, but haven't figured that part out.

Joe

Pretty! Amazing job on the slipcover too!

owlvamp 05-14-2013 03:33 PM

Wow love the slip cover. You did a wonderful job!

Great job on shining her up and wonderful fabric & covering the box. You go, girl!

I thought about painting my Cinderella's box to look like a pumpkin/coach - I like your fabric a lot - it does match the machine very nicely.

amyjo 05-14-2013 07:45 PM

Joe, you would just measure and sew it in a box style for the sides and the middle, hem the bottom. Just like making a pillow with one open end.

cabbagepatchkid 05-15-2013 03:58 AM

She's a beauty and that's awesome that you have a box and cover for it. I really like the fabric that you chose.

I just spent a couple of weeks cleaning a Cinderella that I bought on eBay over a year ago. It has no base, no motor and no foot pedal :-( but it makes decent stitches when I turn the handwheel so I'm wondering if a handcrank would do the trick.

Did you know that the whole outside of the machine comes off for cleaning? I thought mine had arrived broken because the front section had loosened up.

Beautiful machine! I am going to keep my eyes open for one. I have lots of machines, but not one of those.

CanadianGirl 05-15-2013 06:31 AM

Making the slip cover requires a lot of measuring...I made a paper pattern from freezer paper that covered the top and two ends, made the two side panels and sewed them in. added an inch around the bottom to wrap around to the inside. Carefully cut the holes for the handles. Used a lot of fabric glue. Painted the entire box with watered down fabric glue before the final "fitting". Put an extra piece of fabric between the base of the handles to camoflage the slit that has to be cut to allow the slip cover to go over the handle (this hides any gap). Used fabric that would be forgiving (an all-over pattern, no stripes or recognizable repeat to match up).cut away fabric that went over the latches, folded it back and used lots of fabric glue to hold it in place and prevent fraying. The important thing is to use fabric glue, that will dry clear, that is designed to go through the wash and still hold. And don't let anyone look too closely! If their nose is less than 6" away from the final product, give 'em a smack (jk)

Does she have Glass Slippers?

csharp 05-15-2013 04:48 PM

That is one BEAUTIFUL machine....I've never heard of this kind before...just when I thought my "machine wish list" was about done, you've shown me one more. Thanks for sharing. You have done a wonderful job of putting it all back together including the carrying case.

quiltjoey 05-15-2013 05:24 PM

I think you were Cinderella's new-found "prince"! That is one beautiful machine even if it is loud! It's just beautiful to look at and enjoy. What a nice treasure you found. Sometimes we have to search for treasures and brush away a lot of dirt to get the jewel, but look at what you got and a beautiful covering as well. Way to go!!!

What a beautiful machine!! Lucky you! Thanks for sharing. Lol I've added one more to my wish list. It just keeps getting longer!! Hahahaha

I've been there done that...... The motor boss is not positioned inthe right spot for a hand crank and the bushing on the end of the main shaft is too small for the spoked hand wheel of fit on properly.

Cathy, surely you can find a way to put a knob right on a hand wheel??? Kind of like a steering wheel turner knob? I have one of those little Cinderella machines. My DGD checks to make sure I haven't sold it every time she comes over. It had the motor taken off and no foot pedal so the girls can't use it anyway. I think I would let them use it as a HC if it were possible. Once I asked Lovie if I could sell it and she shot back "To me???" pathetic. It is a cute machine but I'm not sure it is a good machine. I feel like my DGDs need a GOOD machine to learn on. I gave them a Spartan with a finger guard. They think it is nice BUT Cinderella has flowers - cool flowers and Cinderella's name is on it. My other grand daughter, Mercy sits with the little Cinderella machine and talks to the machine or makes up stories about the machine. She has visual problems so she can't sew but she wants to and she loves to make up amusing stories. I caught her looking at the lack of motor and lack of foot control and she told the machine, "It;s ok I can't sew either, Cinderella."

The three I'm going to rebuild will have the handles and latches removed so that issue won't be a problem. I just want to get away from the spray contact glue.
Can you tell me what brand and or type of water proof fabric glue you used? There is still so much about this I don't even have a clue about.

Joe when you get it all together make a really awesome tutorial or video for us.

Miriam,

I'll see what I can do.

Beautiful little machine! Nice job on the slipcover. Amazing! The fabric does seem to match the machine.

LoisM 05-16-2013 09:22 PM

Oh, my! What a gorgeous machine! I wouldn't care if she worked or not. I'd just want to LOOK at her.

How sweet!

HI, i just found this thread! I saw the exact lovely machine yesterday at an antique shop. I think it may be missing the bobbin case. Do you know if it needs one? There is thread jammed in around the bobbin area but the guy says it runs. He wants $80 for it..I don't know if that is a good price or not as I don't have any vintage machines but she is beautiful.

miriam 07-12-2015 09:55 AM

The Cinderella takes a regular class 15 bobbin case and bobbin. If you love it then it is worth the money but you may want to see if they can take some off for the bobbin case.
