Clayton Sewing Machines
I picked up a Clayton antique sewing machine with treadle (came with a coffin box cover) at an antique mall this weekend. I have been searching endlessly with no luck online to find out any kind of information about them. Does anyone know anything about those machines and the approximate value? I will add a photo soon.

post a picture. I am intensely curious!

Picture is best but according to ismac's needle list, http://www.ismacs.net/needle_and_sha...eedle-list.pdf, it was made by National. The needle list is not always accurate though.

It has a tag on it that says John M. Smyth. It has a gold star on the tag.

Thank you guys so much for helping me. I will take pictures when I get home. I am hoping this is a rare find, the serial number is in the 100,000 range.

Here's an ad for John Smyth of Chicago mentioning Clayton sewing machine. Common for chain store's to have a "badged" or stenciled brand sewing machine they sold back in the day. Value is most likely in beholders eye or perhaps someone named Clayton will pay a premium. Good Luck.

Thank you! I will still post a picture for you to see. It works like a champ. I bought it for my moms Christmas gift this year.

Looks like National. John M Smyth was a furniture chain until recently.

Did you try www.ismacs.net/Clayton Sewing Machines there might be some information there.

Very nice sewing machine. Are those Calla lilies on it?

For what this info is worth: As best that I could see, that Colliers Magazine was from 1903 that had the ad in it. My parents were married in Chicago in 1936 and purchased a dining room set from a Smyth Furniture Company. If I remember correctly what my mother told me it was John Smyth who owned the store or for whom the store was named. That makes me believe that this may have been "badged" as suggested below. I do remember both parents saying that the furniture company had been in business for a long time (both of my parents were born in Chi and probably grew up hearing the name of the company.)
