cleaning adhesive
 

Hi,
My new-to-me 1938 Featherweight has a sticker on the front from a sewing repair shop. It's dated 7-25-03. I'd like to remove the sticker but there's some old adhesive under it. How do I get it off without hurting the finish? I've heard that peanut butter works... Anyone have experience with that?

It's the oil in the peanut butter that loosens the adhesive. The solid part of the peanut butter holds the oil in place on the adhesive so it has time to work.
If you carefully peel the sticker off you should be able to use a little oil to clean the residue off.

I hate stickers. Soak it in oil for a few days. Some times that works. Some times the sticker is so old it is stuck into the finish or it was dried up medical tape - those are the worst... I'm thinking Glenn used Naptha... but I can't remember.

I usually warm up the sticker with a hair dryer. If it's a foil sticker heat first and any residue is removed by using Kroil lubricant on a rag. If a paper style sticker, soak the sticker with Kroil, let set for 15-20 min, peel sticker off and use Kroil on a rag to remove any remaining adhesive. WD-40(water dispersant formula #40)oil can also work.:)

Will baby oil work?? It won't hurt the finish but not sure how long to leave oil on before trying to get it off.

baby oil isn't going to hurt the finish - let it soak - I haven't tried heat with the older machines.

Goo Gone is my go to, to get rid of icky stuff on anything. One small bottle will last for years if you learn to apply it with a little corner of a paper towel, then use the rest of the towel to wipe with.

I've had some stickers on machines that goo gone wouldn't touch.

I have used "Goo Gone" for things such as this with success.
