Decals

My wife has an antique Elgin machine that I promised her I would bring back to life, which I did.
In cleaning it up I removed all the decals, thinking I could buy more. How wrong I was!!
There seems to be none available anywhere!!
I eventually made my own waterslide decals. I wish I knew how to put a picture on here to show you
the finished machine. I'm quite proud of it.

chaslo 01-16-2012 02:55 PM

Well, I managed to get a picture of one of the decals I made !!!

icon17 01-16-2012 03:19 PM

Wow if thats the Decals you made she should be so proud!!

Lovely Decals

Please, if you would, share your method of making the lovely decals as there are others in the same need of them. This is quite nice and would give more sewing machines a new face lift and new life.

That's a lovely transformation. How do you make the decals? So many of us would like to know.

redbugsullivan 01-16-2012 08:12 PM

What a wonderful Husband!

The transformation is quite impressive! My exclamation when seeing the before and after made my husband inquire... His response, "Wow!" Many of us are interested in your technique. I just used paint markers and lots of patience to fix what little was left of my Alvin. Well done sir!

It's very complicated and quite expensive. I have copies of the decals I made except for the 'Elgin" logo's. I was thinking of offering them on Ebay.

jljack 01-16-2012 09:17 PM

Well, I'd buy them if you did.

Caroline S 01-17-2012 03:25 AM

Wow. Even though you say that it is expensive and complicated to make the decals, I am sure that there would be a market for them among us Vintage Machine collectors.

You are one talented man. You obviously have a graphics/artists background.

I googled "decals - how to make" - there is a whole lot of info there - can make on your own printer. Just in case anyone is interested in giving it a try.

Grannyh67 01-17-2012 06:29 AM

I bet there are a lot of people who would buy them. You could do several different ones and try. I might buy some myself. Granny

You can google the how to. Seems very simple but you do need special paper, this might be the expensive part Chaslo was talking about.

Great job on the decals.

chaslo 01-18-2012 08:41 AM

The 'how to' is easy. The supplies aren't too expensive. It's the many hours and the expense spent getting the decals ready to print.

cat2quilt 01-18-2012 11:02 AM

Beautiful work!

Questions for you chaslo.
1. What did you use for the originals?
2. What computer program did you use for enhancing the originals?
3. Is there silver or gold in the decals? If so how is it applied.
4. How long did it take you to arrive at the finished project?

I think that the easiest part is purchasing the waterslide decal paper. I am sure that there is quite a long learning curve to arrive at your finished product. Sure want to try to do some of my own. I have a lot of candidates for some new "BLING".

chaslo 01-18-2012 12:12 PM

1. Go to 'Art.com'. Look for pictures of sprays of flowers, etc. In most cases, anything you download can only be for your personal use and enjoyment.
2. 'Microsoft Picture it!' and 'Corel Paintshop Photo Pro'
3. No gold or silver. Gold comes as brown on my printer. I never tried silver. Silver would probably turn to grey.
4. Weeks.

chaslo 01-18-2012 12:23 PM

I forgot to say that there are other sites than "Art.com'. Try a few of them.

Thanks chaslo. I have Corel Paintshop Photo Pro. I guess it is time to learn how to use it. I may also try to take pictures of some of the decals on my vintage machines and see if I can enhance them. Won't hurt to try.

Try this site...'www.harkinsneworleans.com'. He is a florist and has some beautful pictures.
