Defective Willcox & Gibbs Chainstitch Organ Needles
 

Recently discovered WG513 Organ brand needles are defective as the groove or keyslot in needle is not machined to proper size. WG513 are used on the popular Willcox Gibbs Automatic Chainstitch so don't buy any new Organ needles for this model. Havn't heard anything on other Organ W&G industrial model needles. I have some I need to return for credit.

My sister got some defective organ needles, too - the return for credit was a very short time so she was not able to return them. The holes were not the right shape and some had burrs - the shafts were twisted or had burrs. I think some times those needles are ok but if you buy any it might be a good idea to look at them under a magnifying glass, test a few and if you need to return them do it before the date expires.

I fooled with the needles a bit more and about half I needed to insert with needle nose pliers and the other half went right in. So they do "work" but are not right. Guess I'll hold onto them as no one else makes them that has any inventory except Organ. The eyes look OK but I need to get my new W&G treadle fixed up more before I take for a test spin. Just bought yesterday and it's one step above boat anchor with lovely irons. Cloth plate was solid rust but she's still a beauty.

Are these defective Organ needles Japanese or Chinese made?

Made in Vietnam. They were made in Japan until the last year or 2. I have size 16's and heard the 12's were no good from a friend. Seems only available replacement is Boye 20 1/2 which are dear and guess I'll hold on to my defective ones.

I'm beginning to see a pattern. As long as the needles are hot sellers the needle makers make them in the main factories. As their popularity drops they move the manufacture of them to the second line locations and don't care if the quality goes to pot.

At least that is my theory at this point.

Sounds feasible. I don't know whether Organ still makes needles in Japan or not.

I wish Schmetz still made them and if I was wealthy I'd order 10,000 and sell them for the next 20 years and have a few for myself. Guess I better start playing the NJ lottery :)

Miriam, In this case that Jon is referring to, it did not matter that the time had expired for returns. I had purchased mine 6 months ago. First, I called the co. I purchased them from, then when the standard email came from Returns dept covering their a-- by stating the return policy, I told them it was in their best interest to accept the return so the manufacturer could identify the extent of the defect. Diamond Needles, the US distributor for Organ had to make the decision in this case. They accepted the needles.

I'm thinking my sister got them from some little Ebay company and she was not able to contact them ever again. I will continue to use Organ needles because I like them. I would be sure to open a pack up and look at it with a magnifying glass and then use to be sure they are ok before I lost contact info.

The Guhl & Harbeck Original Express takes the W&G 63 needle, which does not have the groove, but it otherwise the same as the W&G 64. So your sister might use her needles as bait!

I looked too and I learned that I needed to actually insert the needles in the machine.
