Desperately Seeking Singer....Tailor Top

1 Attachment(s)
Hello, I am looking to purchase a 3 piece Singer tailor treadle machine wood top with metal hardware. If the drawer is available that would be great. I do not need the cast iron treadle base or the sewing machine. I already have a restored base and a 31-15 machine that will be restored. Small steps! The machine and base belonged to my grandfather. It was used to sew canvas material for wings on airplanes he built in North Dakota during the 1920's. This is mainly a sentimental project. In lieu of being able to locate an original top if anyone could help with the dimensions of the three pieces I would consider making a new top and then locating the hardware. I've seen a few on ebay but all have been on the east coast for pick up only. Thanks.

There should be quite a few old industrial electric sewing machine tops out there on the planet. It would have the same foot print as the treadle.

Thanks so much.

My interest is really piqued here. The top resembles the one I have for my Singer 27 treadle that was trashed when it was delivered to me (another woodworking project in process). What is the footprint of your treadle stand and your sewing machine? I can take some pics of the top I have with measurements and post them for you. If you are handy with wood you may be able to recreate the top you need.

I like the hinged back section. Looks like a good idea for most machines. I'm a fan of large work surfaces.

I am in the middle of restoring one of those tops now. I will try to get the dimensions and a phote of all of the correct hardware tonight.

Good Luck finding your top. I'd remind QB members Big Brother / Sister is watching so be careful!

SOme of the links on the last page weren't working but the first page and most of the last page worked.

That thread is great. It get's me excited about putting a top on the frame I have. The treadle wheel looks just like yours and measures 16 1/2" in diameter. The frame was rusty so I had it sandblasted and powder coated. A lot of the smaller parts I sent thru a vibratory finisher at my workplace and they cleaned up like new. They have been primed and repainted to match the black powder coat. The treadle is off-set from the drive wheel and the frame appears to be 4-5" longer than the home frames that I have seen. It is not a lot wider maybe only an inch or so.

As a side note a few years back I visited Niagara North Dakota and visited their tiny museum. The guide was a man in his 80's and after a lively discussion I learned that his mother worked as a seamstress for my grandfather sewing the material for the airplane wings.

a_bluescat, ISMACS has an entry under Class 31 Singer for your table. Its listed as Singer Table # 5231
Also there is one on fleabay titled "1928 Singer Model 31 Tailor Sewing Machine ....". He lists the dimensions
as:38" x 19" folded down, 47-1/2 x 25" both sides up.
These dimensions match a table I have but I am missing the left leaf.

Lee Copp has some pictures of a restored one with coffin top here:
https://sites.google.com/site/oldiro...k33-industrial

The rear leaf has a complex hinge system that lets the leaf slide sideways to line up
with the left leaf when both are up. SteveH has a good picture of it in his thread.

I didn't interpret that at all....just that he would supply him with measurements so he could fabricate one. Sounds like the police to me.

I'd remind QB members Big Brother / Sister is watching so be careful!

SEW, That means the MIB and Black spiders opps are coming to get my toys ? Hope they bring more oil !!

SteveH 01-20-2015 01:52 PM

no, that means that folks who talk about transactions on here which could result in sewing machine sales between members can get banned. THAT was the warning that Jon was trying to send out politely....

Dang I kinda liked the idea of the men in black bringing me some oil. It's 20$ drive to get a 3$ bottle of oil
