The reward goes to.... ndnchf! I tried many other things, including purchasing every spray known to man, but the solution that worked was the leather + hose clamp (plus two humans, four hands, a hammer and a screw driver).

jillaine - I just remembered how I unstuck another frozen wheel and it was even easier. I cut a piece of leather about 1/2" wide and maybe 3" long to wrap around the stuck knob. I put powdered rosin on it first, then slipped a metal radiator hose clamp over it (available from auto parts stores) and tightened it real tight, The clamp has a hex/slotted screw head used to tighten the clamp. With the clamp as tight as I could get it, I used a screwdriver and a hammer to tap the clamp screw head sharply and break the knob loose. It worked great. I'm in Fredericksburg, Virginia |
By the way, we used a piece of an old leather belt, and we did not use any rosin.

Seems like it has taken a very long time to clean that machine the way you are doing it judging by the dates of your posts. I would have screws missing forever if it took me 2 months to clean a machine - and not just the sewing machine's screws... If you follow Muv's method you can get the machine clean and going in a whole lot less time and it will work just fine.

It's not taking a lot of time to clean it. I initially took it apart, but got stopped by the handwheel not freeing up. I didn't want to start cleaning it until I got all the pieces loose. Much happened and much time went by before I was finally able to get the wheel loose. And more time will go by until it's warm enough for me to do the cleaning outside. I have taken many photos so hopefully I'll be able to put humpty dumpty back together again.
