Early Christmas present from DS, a real basket case!

My DS and DL sent me an early Christmas present. It is an 1893 Singer Sphinx, serial # 11646303. The caveat is that it looks like it was someone's restoration project. Everything is in pieces. Don't know if all the pieces are with it yet. She is in very rough condition and will likely be giving her a kerosene bath using Billy's method and a lot of advice from vintage board members. But she came with a wooden puzzle box with attachments. My DH's only comment was, "don't you already have enough junk?". And of course I said that one man's junk is another woman's treasure! :p

Have fun. She will be wonderful when you finish fixing her up.

I would be thrilled with the puzzle box alone...LOL, the machine will be great

She will be beautiful-- My DH bought me a 1851 yrs ago and the drawers were stuffed with all kinds of goodies but my favorite piece was the puzzle box with all the attachments and the original manuals. He only pd $75 and I was offered $300 for just the box and manuals-I said No thanks I'd rather keep them all together.I still use Ol'Gertie she's my favorite.I hope the other ol girls understand

What a treasure of a machine and a treasure of a son and DL for thinking of you. As for myself I would never get it together.

Let us see the before and after pictures when you get her cleaned up! She should be a beauty.

My son gave me that box as a gift once and it's on a shelf in my sewing room. I forgot about it until you posted your pics. I'll have to get mine out and look at it.

Congratulations on your new addition! And good luck getting her cleaned up! I am curious to know, how does this machine run? Is it a manual wheel or treadle? I couldn't tell from your pictures...

nice machine! I hope you can get her up and running!

She is a treadle machine. When I said she was a basket case, it is really true. The treadle base and top need to be put back together before the head can be remounted. This one will be a real test of my mechanical abilities. The wheel turns (hooray!) but she is in need of a deep cleaning and oiling. I will have to find the bullet type of bobbin case because I have not seen one yet among the loose parts. The bobbin winder is disassembled and I am hoping that all the pieces and screws are included. The decals and finish on the table of the machine are very bad, worn and cracked. Other than the oiling I will likely start putting her back together in the spring when the weather is warmer. It is too cold to be working in the garage right now.

Please show us a picture of her when you get her all beautified.

What a great gift! Even if she doesn't work she will be lovely to look and tell stories about. And think of the stories she could tell from 1893!
